Na Fianna and Plunkett’s complete league title doubles

Sat, 28th August 2021

Na Fianna and St Oliver Plunkett/Eoghan Ruadh completed Go-Ahead Dublin football and hurling league doubles in Parnell Park on Saturday.

Na Fianna defeated Kilmacud Crokes 2-16 to 2-12 in their Go-Ahead Dublin AFL1 final while Plunkett's overcame Raheny, 1-21 to 3-11, after extra-time in the Go-Ahead Dublin AFL2 decider.

First-half goals from Conor McHugh and the dynamic James Doran helped the St Mobhi Road men to a 2-6 to 0-8 interval lead against Crokes with Paul Mannion, who tallied 2-7 overall, kicking five points for the Stillorgan side.

By the three-quarter marker a brilliantly taken goal by Mannion had Crokes still giving chase when 2-11 to 1-11 behind with Rory O'Carroll also on target for the southsiders. Donal Ryan, Conor McHugh, James Doran and David Lacey (free) got the Na Fianna scores.

Points from the influential Alasdar Fitzgerald, Conor McHugh, with a powerful driving run that concluded with a fisted score, and David Lacey extended Na Fianna's lead to six points, 2-15 to 1-12, as the game moved into the final minutes.

Paul Mannion gave Crokes late hope with a goal, showing all his experience to pick his spot in the square.

But Na Fianna were not to be stopped as they added the football league's top-flight honours to that of their hurlers.

David Lacey kicked the last score of the contest, a well-judged free from over 40 metres while in the final moments Rory O'Carroll was sent off.

Earlier in the day at the Donnycarney venue Plunkett's finished the stronger to defeat Raheny in extra-time with Gareth 'Nesty' Smith and Seán Bugler leading the scoring.

The Navan Road men kicked the last six points of the contest after Raheny's Seán Grenham had hit 1-1 early in the first period of extra-time to leave just a point in it with five minutes to play in the opening half of extra-time.

Then Seán Bugler, 'Nesty' Smith before the half-time interval in extra-time (the sides were level 1-17 to 3-11), then Bugler again, Craig Dunleavy, Conor Bresnan and Bernard Brogan all found the target, in the second period, to secure the Division 2 title.

In normal time Raheny led 1-6 to 0-8 at half-time with Raheny's Cian Ivers kicking four points (including one free) and were still ahead, 1-8 to 0-10, at the three-quarter stage following points from Michael Grenham and James O'Kane just before the second water stoppage.

Jack Dalton's goal in the 46th minute gave Raheny a four-point lead, 2-8 to 0-10, but Plunkett's responded immediately with a goal from Conor Bresnan.

Gareth Smith steered Plunkett's out of trouble and into extra-time with three points to bring the game level, 2-10 to 1-13. And from there they held the upperhand in the final minutes to run out four-point victors.
