Naomh Fionnbarra claimed the Go Ahead Dublin Adult Football League Division 3 title as they eased past Clanna Gael Fontenoy by 1-12 to 0-6 at Sean Moore Park on Saturday night.
The Cabra outfit have set the standard all year, winning twelve and drawing one of their fourteen games to date, and another strong team display on Saturday was sufficient to book their promotion to AFL2 for next year.
It proved a special evening for Nicky Kehoe and his management team but also for Lar Sweetman and Paul Turner, who won their third Intermediate league medals following similar triumphs in 2007 and 2011.
Jack Gunnery scored the all-important goal for the Barrs, who pulled way thanks to seven points from Karl Grimes and strong defensive showings by both Tommy O’Neill and Eoin Fogarty.
The race to join Naomh Fionnbarra in Division 2 remains incredibly tight with five teams sharing joint second spot at present.
Na Fianna, Trinity Gaels and Templeogue Synge have all played a game less than St Anne’s and St Margaret’s however with Na Fianna and Synge Street enjoying contrasting home wins at the weekend.
At Mobhi Road, the hosts eased past St Margaret’s by 5-12 to 2-5 but Synger were pushed all the way before edging St Sylvester’s by 1-12 to 1-10 at Dolphin Park.
The likes of Evan Sheehan and Scott McConnell kept the home scoreboard ticking over and they prevailed thanks to impressive displays by Bruce Waldron, Conor McKiernan and Alex O’Toole with stand-in goalkeeper Ger Vickery making a superb late intervention to preserve his team’s lead.
In Bohernabreena, St Anne’s ensured they remained in the hunt as they impressed up front when defeating Ballyboden St Enda’s by 2-22 to 3-5.
Darragh Fulham (1-4) and Jamie O’Neill (1-1) accounted for the home goals and while Collie Dunne scored 2-2 for the visitors, St Anne’s made their dominance tell through six points by Matthew Murphy and five points from Scott Fulham.
In Go-Ahead AFL4, Clontarf wrapped up the league title as they registered their thirteenth win on the bounce when defeating Thomas Davis by 3-15 to 0-8 in St Anne’s Park.
The hosts started on the front foot as Jack Tuite set up Eoin Doherty for an early goal and Doherty proved a handful all afternoon as he accrued 3-3 over the hour.
The result was never in doubt from that point with Clontarf adding to their lead through further scores from Jake Costello and Darragh Devilly.
There was another comfortable home win at Ridgewood Park as St Finian’s Swords moved into sole access of second place with a 3-15 to 1-11 success against St Oliver Plunkett’s/Eoghan Ruadh.
Conor Halpin led the way for the hosts with a personal tally of 1-7 with dual player Senan Crosbie also catching the eye with 1-2.
Midfielder Conor Cooley was hugely influential throughout in addition to kicking three points with the home scoring completed by Cian McCabe, Ciaran McGrath, Killian Ryan and Conor Collier.
