Kilmacud Crokes were pushed all the way before defeating Faughs by 0-24 to 2-13 in their Go-Ahead Dublin Adult Hurling League Division 1 encounter at Tymon Park on Wednesday night.
The win secured an eighth successive victory for Crokes, who impressed through the attacking talents of Michael Roche, who chipped in with eight points over the hour, five of which coming from open play.
At the opposite end of the field, both Dan Daly and Ger Veale shone at corner-back with Cian Ryan at half-back and Rory Smith at centrefield also enjoying influential showings.
Brendan Scanlan and James Dillon added three points from play and with Cian Mac Gabhann converting two long-range frees, the visitors held on thanks to further points by Cian Ó Cathasaigh, Ciaran Donovan, Michael Gibbons and Alex Hatt.
There was another away win in Pairc Uí Mhurchú as Na Fianna proved too strong for Ballyboden St Enda’s B, prevailing by 5-27 to 1-9.
The likes of Jack Meagher, Oisín Cullen, Ben Gaughran and Joe Kavanagh were all hugely instrumental for the Glasnevin outfit.
At the 12th Lock, goals proved key as Lucan Sarsfields cemented second spot in the table with an ultimately comfortable 5-18 to 0-16 win against Cuala.
The visitors looked sharp in the first-half with Jamie Conroy, Diarmuid Ó Floinn, Des Duggan and Cormac Spain particularly prominent but goals from Darragh Lyons and Matt Coogan edged Lucan ahead by half-time.
Sarsfields resumed on the front foot with a flurry of points by Ben Coffey, Charlie Keher and Ciaran Dowling with another Coogan goal and points by Cathal Kennedy and Jack Behan easing the hosts home by the final whistle.
It proved far tighter in Clonshaugh as St Vincent’s edged their near neighbours Craobh Chiaráin by 1-18 to 2-14.
Vinnies scoring talisman, John Hetherton, helped himself to 1-9 while Daniel Peel (0-4) and Aaron Cosgrave (0-2) also chipped in with vital scoring returns.
In Go-Ahead AHL2, St Jude’s moved into joint third spot in the table courtesy of their straightforward 1-26 to 0-15 win over Scoil Uí Chonaill at Tymon Park.
The damage was done by half-time as the hosts raced out of the blocks through fine scores from Joe McManus and Callum Graham while Diarmaid McLoughlin was on the end of an excellent team move to push St Jude’s 1-17 to 0-4 ahead by the break.
McManus finished the game with ten points to his name and with Graham scoring 0-3, the hosts were never in trouble with Alan Connolly, Finbarr Wardick, David O’Callaghan and Cuan Manning all adding a brace of points by the close.
That win leaves Jude’s two points behind joint leaders Thomas Davis and Naomh Barróg, with the latter finishing strongly to defeat the Tallaght outfit by 0-19 to 1-15 at Kiltipper Road.
There was another tight finish at Somerton Park as Castleknock withstood some late Setanta pressure to secure a narrow 2-17 to 1-19 victory.
Cian Boyle sparkled in attack for the hosts with his personal tally of 1-7 including 1-5 from open play while Matthew Coughlan (1-3) and Cian Ó Dúlaing (0-4) also left their presence known on the scoreboard.
Despite being reduced to thirteen players in the second-half, Setanta battled superbly after the break but the defensive contributions of goalkeeper Ronan McCann, Darragh O’Connell, Jack King, Evan McSherry, Conal Purcell and substitute Liam Mulroney saw Castleknock hold on by the slimmest of margins.
In Broomfield, a brace of first-half goals by Liam Foley proved key as St Sylvester’s accounted for Ballinteer St John’s by 2-18 to 0-18.
Dan Murphy (0-7) shared the scoring honours with Foley (2-1) as the hosts kept their margin through three points by Eamon McLoughney, two scores apiece by Darragh McLoughney and Cian Whitney and further points by Tommy Costello, Sean Murphy and Will Rooney, his first score in a senior match.
