Ballinteer St John’s made a brief return to the summit of the Go-Ahead Dublin Adult Football League Division 1 table when accounting for Lucan Sarsfields by 4-16 to 3-8 at the 12th Lock on Tuesday night.
That they should enjoy such a handsome victory seemed unlikely at the start of the second quarter as they trailed by 2-4 to 0-3 with Harry Ladd scoring a cracking goal for Lucan during their period of dominance.
Crucially, the visitors hit back in an impressive manner as goals by Luke Breathnach and Dave Devereux saw them enter the break with a marginal 2-9 to 2-7 advantage.
St John’s resumed in a similar vein through the efforts of Nicky Devereux, Colm Fitzpatrick, Johnny Quirke, Dan O’Leary and Matthew Gardiner and further goals from Donnacha Carey and Breathnach saw them home with a fair degree of comfort.
They dropped back to second place in the table twenty-four hours later as Na Fianna delivered a dominant second-half performance to beat Cuala by 2-17 to 2-6 at Mobhi Road.
Previous joint leaders Clontarf now find themselves in joint third spot as they failed to fire up front when falling to Kilmacud Crokes by 1-9 to 0-7 at St Anne’s Park.
Goalkeeper David Higgins, James Murphy and Shane Horan were hugely influential throughout for a Crokes team that kept their noses in front through 1-1 from Tom Fox and two points apiece by Horan and Shane Cunningham.
At the opposite end of the table, St Mary’s Saggart gave themselves a much-needed boost when enjoying an impressive 2-14 to 0-11 win over Ballymun Kickhams at Páirc Ciceam.
There was nothing to separate the teams at half-time with the free-taking of Eoin Murray ensuring St Mary’s were on level terms at 0-6 apiece.
Despite falling two points behind early in the second-half, the visitors struck for the game’s opening goal in the 36th minute through Jamie McCarville and took control from that juncture.
Shane Buckley shone from wing-forward in addition to adding three points and with Conor Jameson and Murray adding to their tally, St Mary’s finished on a high as McCarville added a second goal in added time.
Whitehall Colmcille remain isolated at the bottom of the table as they shipped a heavy 6-10 to 1-10 away defeat at Skerries Harps.
In the Go-Ahead AFL2, Fingal Ravens produced a strong second-half display when getting the better of St Oliver Plunkett/Eoghan Ruadh by 0-17 to 0-10 in Rolestown on Tuesday night.
A string of five unanswered points from Simon Maguire, Sean Kinsella, Dylan Kettle and Jake Pope helped the hosts to a narrow 0-8 to 0-6 interval lead.
Kinsella added a brace of scores early in the second-half and Ravens pushed on from there through further scores by Sam Hannigan, Kettle and Brian Gleeson while late points from Kettle and Dan Cibotar helped confirm their seventh win of the season.
That win leaves Ravens a point behind joint leaders Parnell’s and St Patrick’s Donabate, who registered important away wins at Round Towers Clondalkin and Raheny respectively on Wednesday night.
At Monastery Road, Parnell’s gradually pulled away from Towers after the break, having enjoyed a narrow 0-7 to 0-5 interval lead.
Alex Hutton, Thomas Davis, Adam Myler, Cillian Hunt and Conor McGrath all contributed on the scoreboard in the first-half with the free-taking of Hunt handing the visitors a healthy buffer in the second-half.
St Vincent’s are right in the promotion mix as they overcame St Brigid’s by 0-16 to 0-9 at Páirc Naomh Uinsionn.
The lively Josh Kelly (0-4) and Harry Kirwan (0-3) kept the home scoreboard ticking over as Dara Parker and Brendan Egan ensured Vinnies maintained their control over the hour.
