ROUND-UP: GO-AHEAD AFL 1 & AFL 2- JUNE 22nd-23rd

Mon, 24th June 2024

St Mary’s Saggart did just enough to clinch their fourth league win of the season as they pipped Cuala by 2-10 to 1-12 in their thrilling Go Ahead Dublin Adult Football League Division 1 encounter in Saggart on Saturday evening.

In doing so, they greatly enhanced their survival prospects as they netted twice in the second-half having trailed narrowly by 0-6 to 0-5 at the break.

A superb goal from wing-back Adam Drewett handed the hosts some momentum after the break but Cuala responded with 1-4 on the bounce to leave St Mary’s in a precarious position.

However, a fortuitous goal from Mick O’Keeffe proved telling, as did three Eoin Murray points and a brace by the influential Shane Buckley, by the final whistle.

Round Towers Lusk were another team that boosted their AFL1 hopes as they defeated already relegated Whitehall Colmcille by 2-13 to 0-12 at Collins Avenue.

Having played against the breeze in the first-half, the visitors were boosted by a goal from a penalty by Aaron Naughton and a Luke White goal from Darragh Kelly’s incisive pass to lead by 2-4 to 0-8 at half-time.

Naughton finished the game with 1-5 to his name and with Liam Bohan adding three points, Towers eased home thanks to further scoring contributions by Killian Healy, Kelly, Chris Tonge, David Moore and Sean Bollard.

If Lusk managed to remain in the top-flight for 2025, they will be joined by North County neighbours St Patrick’s Donabate, who claimed the Go-Ahead Dublin Adult Football League 2 crown when defeating Naomh Olaf by 1-12 to 0-7 at Robbie Farrell Park.

An early goal from Luke Sweetman provided the hosts with a dream start but an understandably cagey first-half ensured that defences largely remained on top.

To that end, St Pat’s were hugely indebted to their back-line of Rory McKeon, Jamie Mullins, Ben Gaston, Adam Darby, Dan Ryan and Kieran Conroy as they restricted Naomh Olaf to just two scores in the second-half.

At the opposite end. Clyde Burke delivered a hugely instrumental display that included four points and with Stephen Dempsey and Ollie Brooks adding two points apiece, the hosts pulled away thanks to further scores by Sean Walsh, Killian McKeon, Jamie Mullins and Ciaran Shields.

Elsewhere, Parnell’s kept their promotion drive on track as second-half goals by Alex Hutton and Stephen Duffy helped them overcome Naomh Mearnóg by 2-9 to 0-8.

Fingal Ravens remain in second spot as they proved far too strong for Round Towers Clondalkin, winning by 5-18 to 2-7 at Monastery Road.

Both Dylan Kettle and Sean Kinsella proved a handful for the home defence and with substitutes Shane McDonagh, Conor Hannigan and Brian Gleeson adding scores after the break, Ravens eased home through the tireless efforts of Callum Monaghan, Jamie Clarke and Dan Sammon.

At the opposite end of the table, a depleted Ballyboughal’s relegation alongside Erin’s Isle was confirmed as they suffered an 8-11 to 0-5 reverse to Kilmacud Crokes.

There were mitigating factors for the hosts, given the numerous injuries that have suffered all season, and the visitors took full advantage with goals from Hugh Moran, Dan Brennan, Jonny Quinlan, Paddy Flaherty and Mark Coughlan helping build a sizeable 5-4 to 0-3 interval lead.

The procession towards the home goal continued unabated after the break as goals by Darragh Jones (2) and Tom Doran completed a resounding victory for Crokes.
