Flashback: Dublin v Tyrone 2013 National Football League Final

Fri, 22nd March 2024

By Conor Martin

With Dublin and Tyrone set to do battle this Sunday in the final round of the Allianz Football League, Conor Martin looks back at the meeting between the two in the 2013 National Football League Final.

It would be Dublin’s 9th league title and our first since 1993.

In the first-half, Dublin couldn’t shake off the Ulstermen. However, two points each from Bernard Brogan and Diarmuid Connolly helped Dublin into a 0-4 to 0-1 lead by the 11th minute.

Tyrone keeper Niall Morgan, who would go on to be named Man of the Match, kept Tyrone in contention and helped the Red Hands square things up.

Bryan Cullen, Brogan and Paddy Andrews restored the lead of three, but by the break it would be level with Dublin and Tyrone all square at 10 points apiece.

Paul Mannion was doing the business for Dublin, but Sean Cavanagh, Conor Gormley, Morgan and Conor McAliskey ensured parity for Tyrone by the referee’s half-time whistle.

Tyrone would be the first ones on the board after the restart, but Kilmacud Crokes clubman Mannion answered almost instantaneously as the game continued to be finely balanced.

An uncharacteristic miss from a Brogan free saw Mark Donnelly go down the other end and fist the ball over to put Tyrone into the lead.

Goalkeepers Morgan and Stephen Cluxton then did the work of their forward-line by adding to the scoresheet.

Inside the final five minutes, Martin Penrose put Tyrone ahead, but it was Dublin who would have the final say...

Dean Rock came off the bench to replace Brogan, levelled the game and put his side ahead in the 69th minute.

Jack McCaffrey would add another, whilst Cavanagh’s contribution just before the final whistle wasn’t followed by an equalising score and Dublin held on to be crowned Allianz Football League Division 1 champions!
