Senior hurlers hoping to repeat league victory over Rebels

Dublin’s senior hurlers face Cork this Saturday night in Páirc Uí Rinn (7.0) in the All-Ireland SHC Qualifiers while it’s back to Croke Park for last year’s All-Ireland finalists, Kilkenny and Galway, when they clash in the Leinster SHC final next Sunday (4.0).

The full line-up is as follows:

All-Ireland SH Qualifiers – Round 1:

Wexford v Offaly, Innovate Wexford Park, 3.30

Westmeath v Limerick, TEG Cusack Park, 5.0

Clare v Laois, Ennis, 7.0

Leinster SH final: Galway v Kilkenny, Croke Park, 4.0

DUBLIN v CORK

Dublin are seeking their first championship win over Cork since the 1927 All-Ireland final when they won by 4-8 to 1-3. The counties have met eight times in the championship since then, with Cork winning them all.

The most recent championship meeting was in the 2013 All-Ireland semi-final when Cork won by 1-24 to 1-19 after Dublin had won the Leinster title for the first time since 1961

2016 CHAMPIONSHIP

Dublin beat Wexford by 2-19 to 0-12 in the Leinster quarter-final before losing the semi-final to Kilkenny by 1-25 to 0-16. Cork lost the Munster quarter-final to Tipperary by 0-22 to 0-13.

2016 ALLIANZ LEAGUE

Dublin 4-21 Cork 2-17 (Div 1A, Croke Park, March 5)

It was all very easy for Dublin who led by 3-12 to 0-9 at half-time. David Treacy 1-7 (0-5 frees) and Eamonn Dillon 2-3 were Dublin’s top scorers while Patrick Horgan 0-7 (0-6 frees, 0-1 ‘65’) and Seamus Harnedy 2-0 were Cork’s leading marksmen.

Dublin v Cork - Allianz Hurling League Division 1A Round 3

WEXFORD v OFFALY

The Leinster pair meet in the championship for the first time since 2012 but they did clash in the Allianz League (1B) on March 13 last when Offaly won by 2-21 to 3-11 in Innovate Wexford Park. Wexford scored two early goals in the first-half but Offaly responded well and were well on top by half-time when they led 2-12 to 2-4.

Shane Dooley scored 0-15 (0-11 frees, 0-1 ‘65’) for Offaly while Conor McDonald hit 2-8 (2-0 pens, 0-7 frees) for Wexford.

WESTMEATH v LIMERICK

They had never met in the championship prior to last season and now they are heading for a second clash in a year. Limerick beat Westmeath by 4-15 to 1-12 in the Round 1 qualifier in Mullingar last year.

Shane Dowling (1-3), Kevin Downes (1-2) and Paul Browne (1-1) were top scorers for Limerick while Brendan Murtagh (0-6) and Cormac Boyle (1-2) were Westmeath’s main marksmen.

2016 CHAMPIONSHIP

This will be Limerick’s second game, having lost to Tipperary by 3-12 to 1-16 in the Munster semi-final while Westmeath have had four games, winning three and losing one as follows.

GALWAY v KILKENNY

It has been a very busy rivalry in recent times, with next Sunday’s game the 10th between them since Galway joined the Leinster championship in 2009. They met twice in 2015-2014-2012.

Galway’s only win from those six games was in the 2012 Leinster final. The 2012 All-Ireland final and the 2014 Leinster semi-final were drawn, while Kilkenny won in the 2015 and 2012 (replay) All-Ireland finals and the 2014 Leinster semi-final replay.

LAST CHAMPIONSHIP CLASH

Kilkenny 1-22 Galway 1-18 (2015 All-Ireland final)

Galway led by 0-14 to 1-8 at half-time but much-improved Kilkenny won the second-half by 0-14 to 1-4. They led by seven points in stoppage time before Joe Canning scored a goal to cut the deficit to four points.

TJ Reid on 1-7 led the way for Kilkenny’s nine scorers, while Galway’s Johnny Coen scored an ‘own point’. Joe Canning scored 1-8 and Jason Flynn 0-4 for Galway.

LAST COMPETITIVE CLASH

Kilkenny 0-21 Galway 1-14 (2016 Allianz HL, Nowlan Park, 6 March 2016)

Kilkenny led by 0-16 to 0-8 after 40 minutes before a spirited Galway fightback cut the deficit to a point. However, Kilkenny re-asserted themselves and ran out four-point winners.

LEINSTER FINAL SHORTS

? Galway are bidding to win the Leinster final for the second time since moving east for championship purposes in 2009. They won in 2012 and lost the 2010 and 2015 finals to Kilkenny and the 2013 final to Dublin.

? Kilkenny are bidding to win the Leinster title for the 16th time in 19 seasons. They won in 1998-99-2000-01-02-03-05-06-07-08-09-10-11-14-15. They missed out in 2004-12-13.

? Other than in 2012 when they were beaten by Galway, Kilkenny haven’t lost a Leinster final since 1997 when they went down to Wexford.

? This will be the 42nd championship meeting between Galway and Kilkenny. The Cats lead 30-9 with two draws from the previous 41 clashes.
