If we’re open at back we can be punished: Denis Bastick

If we’re open at back we can be punished: Denis Bastick

Wed, 22nd June 2016

Dublin senior footballer Denis Bastick knows any repeat of the defensive lapses that occurred against Laois will spell major danger for his side in this Sunday's Leinster SFC semi-final against Meath in Croke Park (6.35).

The Dubs were totally in control of the game at half-time in Nowlan Park in the quarter-final against the O'Moore County yet conceded two goals in quick succession to 14-man Laois.

"No, defence-wise, we don’t like giving away any goals," says the experienced Templeogue Synge Street midfielder.

“If we can keep a team down or keep them from scoring goals, we have a good chance.

“To ship two goals in a short space of time, that was disappointing for us.

“But, on the flip-side, it gives us something to work on, it keeps us clued in, it doesn’t let us get ahead of ourselves, in that sense.

“So we’re not thinking ‘we’re great, we’ll steam-roll everyone’.

“We know that, if we don’t play well and we’re very open at the back and don’t do the right things, we can be punished,” concludes Denis.

The curtain-raiser in Croke Park on Sunday sees Kildare and Westmeath meet in their provincial semi-final (4.15).
