The Weekend's AFL Match Reports and Results:
Cuala 1-7 Fingal Ravens 0-8
Cuala took on Ravens on a perfect evening for football in Dalkey's Hyde Park.
Fingal raced out to an early lead and were nearly out of sight before half time, but scores from Luke Keating and John Sheanon kept Cuala within touching distance at the break (0-6 - 0-2). Niall Tormey and Luke Keating traded a few frees and a long range free from Cuala's goal keeper Darren McBrien got Cuala within 2 points and then Cuala got the game changing goal, another long range free from Darren McBrien dropped short this time and Colm Sheanon booted home a scrappy goal after a goal mouth scramble. Scott O'Brien gave Cuala a 2 point lead with time nearly up, Fingal pushed hard for a goal, but Cuala manned up and defended well. The youngest player on the pitch was the standout performer, Cuala's 17 year old cornerback Enda Kelly.
Cuala have Syls in Broomfield in 2 weeks and Fingal have Lucan in Rolestown in a crucial 4 pointer.
St. Maurs 1-12 St. Oliver Plunketts E.R. 1-9
Plunketts visited Rush on a fine Saturday evening.
Maurs blitzed Plunketts in the first half with a strong wind on their backs, it started with a Ronny Maguire goal moments in and Maurs pushed on picking off scores at will from Ciaran Reddin, Eoin Fletcher, Danny Byrne and David Carrick. The half time score was 1-8 to 0-4.
Plunketts had the wind and started their resurgence in the second half, but Reddin, Mikey O'Reilly and David Carrick points kept Maurs in front. The game finished 1-12 to 1-9, a huge win for Maurs.
Maurs need to get more points to get out of the relegation zone. They have a trip to the Firhouse Road in 2 weeks to take on Boden and Plunketts are back in Martin Savage Park to take on League leaders Crokes.
Lucan Sarsfields 1-16 Castleknock 1-8
Lucan are going from strength to strength with arguably one of their best results. They put on a masterclass against a strong Castleknock side.
Lucan's defence was sound with Debutant C.J Smith and stalwart Ciaran McHugh solid at the back and their kicking was on song and they outscored Castleknock 10 - 1 in the first half with Stephen O'Shaughnessy coming to the fore with 3 of his 5 points and Dublin Midfielder Emmet O'Conghaile kicked 2 more.
Brian Callopy palmed home a high ball that dropped into the Castleknock square. Castleknock gave a better showing in the second half, Tom Quinn went well in midfield and James Sherry and Eoghan Quinn did damage inside, they got a late consolation goal, but it was too little too late. Points from Lucan's Brendan Gallagher, Tommy Brennan, Sean Newcombe and Darren Gavin kept Castleknock at bay and helped them to an 8 point victory.
Kilmacud Crokes 2-8 St. Sylvesters 1-7
Crokes and Slys had a tight affair on Sunday morning in Silver Park.
Syls got off to perfect a start racing into a 1-2 to no score lead. The sides were tit for tat till the half and then in the second half Crokes went up a gear and goals for Pat Burke and a penalty from Mark Vaughan saw them home.
Crokes remain on the top of AFL1 after their 4 point win, they have a trip to Martin Savage Park in 2 weeks and Syls have a visit from Cuala to Broomfield.
Na Fianna 2-18 Raheny 1-10
Na Fianna were too strong for struggling Raheny on Saturday evening.
Raheny's fire power was no match for Na Fiannas, they relied too heavily on the boot of their score and chief Gavin Ivory, who scored 1-7 of their 1-10 including a penalty and frees. Eoin Neville got 1 of Na Fianna's goal and Adam Caffrey slotted a peno. Na Fianna went into the break 4 up and Conor McHugh who tormented the Raheny backline throughout, showed his class slotting and assisting scores and Odhran O'Maoileidigh continued his rich vein of form, the game was as good as over after 40mins, Na Fianna pushed on to win by 11.
Raheny need a win badly against Brigids in St. Annes Park and Na Fianna are away to Castleknock in Somerton.
St. Vincents 2-09 St. Brigids 1-05
This was a tough physical encounter which was closer than the final score line suggests. Both sides were missing a number of regular starters but some of the replacements stepped in to produce solid performances with St Brigids team finishingwith four minors on the pitch.
Vincents started the quicker with the threat of Mossy Quinn inside who scored an early goal after good build up play from Cormac Diamond. Gavin Burke and Ruairi Trainor added points before Trainor was fouled for a penalty but Quinn pushed his effort the wrong side of the post.At times Brigids were wasteful with their final ball and dropped a lot of efforts short butLorcan McCarthy helped keep the home side in touch at half time with a couple of points to leave the score Vins 1-04 to Brigids 0-4.
St Vincents again started the second half brighter popping over a couple of points but St Brigids introduced a couple of their Dublin minors and they injected a bit of pace into the game with Malachy Tighe in particular playing a huge role in St Brigids goal when he made a burst from defence to set up Colly Freeman to finish. Gavin Burke then responded for Vins when he palmed a well worked goal to the net after a one two with Quinn. The closing minutes saw Vincents push the game out of sight from the Russell Park men with further points from Burke and Enda Varley, which put them 7 points clear at the end.
Vincents have St. Judes in Pairc Na Uinsionn and Brigids travel to St. Annes to face Raheny on July 9th.
St. Judes 5-15 Thomas Davis 0-7
Tymon was the stage for a Judes 23 point hammering of Thomas Davis.
Judes were taking no prisoners on Saturday evening and were ruthless till the end. Judes first half alone ended the contest, they went in 3-8 to 0-4 at the break, but it didn't stop there and added 2-7 more in the second half and kept Thomas Davis to 7 points.
Judes will look to bring this form to Pairc Na Uinsionn in 2 weeks and Thomas Davis will look for a better performance against Ballymun in Kiltipper Road.
