AFL1 Round-Up

Tue, 14th June 2016

A round-up of last weekend's AFL1 action:

Lucan Sarsfields 0-14 St. Vincents 2-14

St. Vincents came out of the 12th Lock on Sunday morning with a 6 point win after an entertaining encounter. The visitors got off to a fast start through points from Joe Feeney, Gavin Burke and Shane Carthy. Lucan got back into the game thanks to some intelligent forward play from Stephen O’Shaughnessy as well as the speed and directness of Jack Carey who was making his senior debut. Carey had a great tussle with Vins corner back Hugh Gill throughout the game. Vins full forward Enda Varley showed composure to round the Lucan goalkeeper for a first half goal that saw Vincents lead 1-7 to 0-8 at the half time break.

The Marino men had a fast start to the second half with points from Carthy and Tomás Quinn before Ruairi Trainor was fouled for a penalty which Quinn slotted home. Lucan continued to fight with Brendan Gallagher scorer in chief with some excellent points while his brother Dan impressed at fullback. Lucan chased a goal but with Jarleth Curley and Michael Concarr to the fore, Vincents kept a clean sheet to run out winners.

Lucan have a massive game against Raheny in St Annes Park on Wednesday, they need to start getting points from teams around them if they want to stay in AFL1. St. Vincents will face their Championship opponents Na Fianna in AFL1 on Wednesday in Pairc Na Uinsionn.

St. Maurs 1-9 Fingal Ravens 1-11

Fingal battled hard to earn a 2 point win in Rushe. Fingals early goal gave them a buffer till midway through the second half until a Chris Carthy goal put them within 2 (1-4 to 1-6) it was tit for tat till the end, but Fingal never let Maurs get in front.

It was a much need win for Fingal, which saw them elevate off the bottom of the table and bypass Raheny, Lucan and Maurs.

Maurs need a win, but it won't come easy away to Syls in Broomfield. Ravens welcome high flying Kilmacud to Rolestown, but they will be high on confidence after a recent win over Boden and Sunday's win over Maurs.

St. Brigids 1-9 St. Judes 2-9

St Brigids and Judes met on Saturday evening in Russell Park where two of Dublins All-Ireland winning stars were on show. Paddy Andrews turned out for Brigid's and Kev McManamon for St. Judes.

It was a sloppy first half from both sides with poor shot selection and passing on display. St. Judes looked the more dangerous with Kev Mc roaming in the forwards causing trouble and popping over a few points. Andrews down the far end got his own scorching point from a very tight angle. Toward the end of the half a long hopeful ball into the Judes forward line caught the St Brigids backs out and Judes punished them with a goal to put them four points up at halftime.

St. Brigids struggled to get into any rhythm in the second half and even though Judes went six points up after a Kev Mc goal Judes managed to keep Brigid's in the game when loose pass in the Judes back line allowed Kevin Bonner in for a goal to leave a couple of points between the sides. St. Brigid's couldn't capitalise on their goal though and Judes ran out deserved winners by three points.

St. Brigids travel to Kiltipper Road to face Thomas Davis and St. Judes host Ballymun Kickhams in Tymon.

Na Fianna 4-12 Thomas Davis 0-15

Goals win games and Na Fianna got 4 in the first 20mins. They lead 4-6 to 0-5 at halftime with the goals coming from Eoghan Neville (2), Odhran O'Maoileidigh and Senan Coughlan. Na Fianna's backline kept Thomas Davis goalless and Emile Mullan kept their danger man Paul Hudson to 2 points from play. Thomas Davis outscored Na Fianna 10 - 6 in the second half, but Na Fianna had the tie dead and buried in the first half. Tomo Brady and Conor McHugh were back with Na Fianna and showed their class throughout.

There's a top of the table clash next Wednesday as Na Fianna (3rd) take on St. Vincents (2nd) in Pairc Na Uinsionn, the sides will also face off in the next round of SFC and Thomas Davis will look to leap frog St Brigids with a win over them in Kiltipper Road.

Kilmacud Crokes 1-9 Castleknock 1-8

Kilmacud won by the minimum on Saturday evening in Silver Park. Paul Mannion was back in Crokes' rampant forward line and was the added spark they needed.

Kilmacud are on the top of the pile and will look to keep the good thing going away to Fingal in Rolestown next Wednesday. Castleknock will be up against an in form Cuala side next.

Ballyboden St. Endas 3-10 St. Sylvesters 1-12

Sylvester's second half resurgence just fell short. A Goal from Alan Foy and points from Micháel McCarthy, Edmund Walsh and Gary Sweeney had Syls up by 1, but 2 points and Bodens 3rd goal, saw them win out by 4 points in Abbottstown.

Boden have an away tie with Plunketts in Martin Savage Park and Syls have home advantage against Maurs next Wednesday.

Cuala 3-15 Raheny 1-13

Cuala have put together back to back wins for the first time this season with victories over Vincents and Raheny. It was an important game for both teams because of their low proximities in the standings.

Cuala got off to a great start in Hyde Park with 2 goals from in form Luke Keating within the first 20 minutes, before they were pegged back by a fine Rutherson Real goal just before the break. Cuala went in at the break 4 points to the good.

The score board was kept ticking over by the place kicking of Gavin Ivory of Raheny and the impressive Luke Keating of Cuala, who finished the game with 2-7 to his name. Cuala stretched their lead to 6 with a Con O'Callaghan goal and soon after went down to 14 men, Raheny went on the hunt for goals, but Cuala's defence held out and transitioned the ball well to finish with two scores from Martin Cahalin and Matthew Clancy, giving Cuala an 8 point win.

Raheny have another crucial match on Wednesday week, they host Lucan in St. Annes, while Cuala travel to Castleknock.
