Wins for Na Fianna and Plunkett’s in AHL1 and AHL2 finals

Sun, 22nd August 2021

Na Fianna were crowned Go-Ahead Dublin AHL1 champions with their 0-22 to 0-17 victory over Ballyboden St Enda's in Parnell Park on Saturday evening.

Dublin senior Donal Burke led the way for the St Mobhi Road men with ten points, including seven frees.

Na Fianna led 0-18 to 0-12 at the three-quarter marker with a decisive moment in this contest coming at the commencement of the last quarter.

Boden were awarded a penalty but Eoin Skelly denied Simon Lambert and Na Fianna swept down field to score which put themselves into a seven-point lead, 0-19 to 0-12.

Shane Barrett extended that advantage to eight points with a fine point before Simon Lambert and Conor McKeon tried to lift Boden with scores of their own.

Donal Burke's pointed close range free, his tenth score of the day, had Na Fianna 0-21 to 0-14 clear before Luke McDwyer hit three (two frees, one from play) in quick succession for St Enda's.

But Na Fianna were comfortable winners with Seán Ryan concluding the scoring for the Glasnevin men.

In the opening half points from Colin Currie, Donal Burke (two frees), and AJ Murphy in quick succession had Na Fianna 0-5 to 0-2 ahead by the tenth minute.

However, by the first water break Boden were level after Shane Kennedy, with two points including a 65, and Niall McMorrow were on target (0-5 each).

Na Fianna made their vital move with scores just before and after the half-time interval.

Scores from Donal Burke, Seán Baxter and Burke again from halfway ensured a 0-12 to 0-8 lead for their side at the break.

Na Fianna continued in impressive fashion on the restart with Colin Currie, Donal Burke (two frees) and Seán Currie scoring to lead 0-16 to 0-8.

The freetaking for Conor Dooley and a point from play by Seán McDonnell hauled Boden back into contention, 0-18 to 0-12, by the second water break.

If Boden had successfully converted the penalty at the start of the fourth quarter it would have made it very interesting but Eoin Skelly's kept Na Fianna on the road to the AHL1 title.

Two first half goals put St Oliver Plunkett/Eoghan Ruadh on the road to a 4-20 to 2-16 victory over Raheny in Saturday's Go-Ahead Dublin AHL2 final at Parnell Park.

Points from Cian Boland, Neil Clerkin, Brian McDonnell and Clerkin again gave Plunkett's a 0-6 to 0-2 lead before Niall Arthur struck for goal in the 15th minute to give the Navan Road men a 1-6 to 0-3 lead and it was 1-6 to 0-4 at the first water break.

In the 23rd minute Ben McSweeney applied the finish for Plunkett's second goal and by the half-time break they were 2-10 to 0-6 ahead.

The eventual winners made the perfect restart when Brian McDonnell hit their third goal and Niall Arthur followed up with a point to put 13 points between the sides, 3-11 to 0-7.

Eight minutes into the second half Ger Coady raised a green flag for Raheny, shortly after Liam Dunne had a goal attempt parried over by Plunkett's keeper Bill McCormack.

By the second water stoppage Plunkett's were 3-15 to 1-10 clear before Liam Dunne converted two frees for Raheny to reduce the gap.

With ten minutes to goal Niall Arthur struck his second goal for the winners with Liam Dunne getting a late consolation goal for Raheny.
