Round Up: of the Go-Ahead Senior 2 Football Championship

Mon, 28th August 2023

Naomh Barróg completed their second successive victory in Group 1 of the Go-Ahead Dublin Senior 2 Football Championship when overcoming St Anne’s by 1-13 to 2-5 at Páirc Barróg on Saturday evening.

The visitors struck for two early goals to leave Barróg on the back foot but a goal from wing-forward Harry Nolan and points from Paul Tolan and Matthew Nolan edged the hosts 1-8 to 2-1 ahead by half-time.

The Kilbarrack side kept control of matters thanks to excellent defensive performances from George Bowder and Mick Tolan and with Paul Tolan finishing the game with seven points to his name, they held on with Ryan Alexander, Ciaran Gallagher and Alex Dycher also on the scoresheet.

There was another home win at Monastery Road as Round Towers Clondalkin maintained their unbeaten start when beating St Maur’s by 2-9 to 0-11.

Ian Ward scored 1-4 for the hosts and with Kevin McGibney raising another green flag, Towers confirmed their win thanks to three points by the highly influential Tom Galvin.

In Group 2, St Mary’s Saggart bounced back from the disappointment of their first-round loss to Naomh Olaf when enjoying a 1-11 to 2-5 home win against St Oliver Plunkett’s/Eoghan Ruadh.

After an even and low-scoring start to proceedings, Adam Brady’s goal and three points on the bounce saw St Mary’s lead by 1-5 to 0-2 at the break.

They kept control of matters thanks to their midfield pairing of Kyle Butler and Shane Buckley and while the visitors pounced for two goals upon the restart, five frees from Eoin Murray and three points from play by Jamie McCarville proved sufficient for St Mary’s.

The trend of home victories continued at Páirc Uí Bhriain as a Sean O’Driscoll goal and a superb defensive showing from David Byrne saw Naomh Olaf pip Round Towers Lusk by 1-13 to 2-8, with Cormac Howley and Liam Bohan netting for the visitors.

There were two more home successes in Group 3 with Clontarf and Ballyboughal registering three points victories over Fingallians and Naomh Mearnóg respectively.

At St Anne’s Park, Kieran McKeon’s goal in the 40th minute proved pivotal as Clontarf won by 1-7 to 0-7 while on Sunday morning, Ballyboughal defeated Mearnóg by 0-12 to 0-9.

Gerry Seaver top scored with six points and with Eoghan McPhilbin adding three points and Ben Callanan kicking a brace, the hosts prevailed thanks to influential displays by goalkeeper David Downey, Cahal Flynn, Ross Gallagher and Simon Barrett.

St Brigid’s were the only team to gain any kind of tangible reward on their travels as they drew with St Pat’s on a 0-7 to 1-4 scoreline in their Group 4 encounter in Donabate.

The remaining fixture between Fingal Ravens and Erin’s Isle was abandoned due to an injury close to full-time.
