It proved a positive afternoon for Dublin’s representatives in their provincial campaigns on Saturday with Scoil Uí Chonaill and Man O’War progressing to the next stage of their respective Leinster championships.
In Darver, Scoil Uí Chonaill were pushed all the way before edging Louth outfit Roche Emmets by 1-12 to 1-11 in their Leinster GAA AIB Intermediate Club Football Championship quarter-final.
After their thrilling extra-time IFC final win over Parnell’s five days previously, Scoil carried on in a positive manner as they blitzed their opponents with an unanswered 1-4 inside the opening ten minutes.
Brendan Murray excelled through for the winners and it was his early goal that set the tone for their dominance in the first quarter.
Murray also chipped in with a point to complement further scores by Ryan Keane, Neil O’Flynn and Rob Kennedy as the Dublin champions raced into an early seven-point advantage.
Roche Emmets, playing against the breeze, finally got off the mark late in the quarter but Scoil continued to control matters as Emmet Rogan, Murray, Kennedy, O’Flynn and a free by goalkeeper Andy Bunyan moved the Clontarf Road side 1-9 to 0-5 clear by half-time.
A second Rogan free maintained Scoil’s seven-point lead early in the second-half and while Conor Dixon chipped in with a crucial score as the half progressed, the hosts, who were denied on two occasions by Bunyan, found the net through Peter Lynch to eventually level matters with five minutes of normal time remaining.
With the exertions of Monday beginning to take its toll, Rogan stepped up to edge his side back ahead and despite some late scares on their goal, Scoil held on to secure their place in the last four.
Man O’War were also pushed all the way before they completed a 2-9 to 0-10 win over Ballinacor in their Leinster GAA AIB Junior Club Football Championship quarter-final.
Despite falling behind early on, it was the Dublin champions that controlled the early jousts with frees from Willie Moore and Conor Dolan edging them in front by the 10th minute.
Moore and Dolan kept their scoreboard ticking over with Sean Hussey also on target as Man O’War kept their noses in front by 0-5 to 0-3 at half-time.
Despite moving three points clear early in the second-half, the visitors began to lose their way slightly as Ballinacor kicked four points on the bounce to edge in front by the 43rd minute.
However, the contest turned irrevocably in Man O’War’s favour at the end of the third quarter as John Fleming pounced for the game’s opening goal with points from Moore and Dolan leaving three points between the teams with ten minutes remaining.
That margin was reduced to two points deep into added time but Fionn Slattery was on hand to put the result beyond doubt with an insurance goal for a Man O’War team best served on the day by James Kelly.
