ROUND-UP: GO-AHEAD SENIOR 2 AND SENIOR 3 HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND 2

Thu, 27th July 2023

Castleknock bounced back from their opening round defeat to Craobh Chiaráin when overcoming Ballinteer St John’s by 2-17 to 1-16 in their Go Ahead Dublin Senior 2 Hurling Championship Group 1 clash at Marley Park on Wednesday evening.

With both Tom Aherne and Rob Aherne to the fore, St John’s enjoyed a deserved 1-8 to 0-7 interval advantage with Neil Hogan doing the bulk of the away scoring from placed balls.

Castleknock was a decisive push early in the third quarter thanks to goals from Cian Boyle and Niall O’Callaghan and they pushed on to claim the win thanks to strong individual performances by Darragh O’Connell, Evan McSherry, Jack Purcell and substitutes Brian Hughes and Michael Ryan.

Having been idle in Round 1, Naomh Barróg opened up their campaign on a winning note as they made the short but successful trip to St Anne’s Park when defeating Clontarf by 1-22 to 2-11.

The visitors led by 0-12 to 0-5 at the break and despite the concession of two second-half goals, were full value for their win with Cillian Costello netting for the Kilbarrack side.

In the Go-Ahead Dublin Senior 2 Hurling Championship Group 2, St Jude’s picked up their second successive victory as they got the better of Naomh Fionnbarra by 2-19 to 2-9 at Tymon Park.

The hosts raced into an early five-point lead and extended their advantage when Joe McManus netted in the 12th minute.

Leading by 1-9 to 0-4 at the break, St Jude’s continued to impress but were stalled briefly as Glen Dodrill converted a penalty following a foul on Stephen Costello.

However, the Fionnbarra joy was short-lived as their opponents immediately struck back as John Carty raced through before releasing Conor Nolan for a tidy finish to the net.

McManus kept the home scoreboard ticking over, finishing the game with 1-7 to his name, and with Podge McNally and Carty chipping in with two points apiece, they continued to build their lead thanks to three points in the final quarter from substitute Danny Sutcliffe.

In the Go-Ahead Dublin Senior 3 Hurling Championship Group 2, Na Fianna made a winning start as they enjoyed an impressive 2-16 to 1-12 away win at Naomh Mearnóg.

Eoin Flaherty led the way in terms of scores, accruing 1-9 over the hour, with Liam Stacey also impressing in addition to contributing two points.

Eddie Mongey and Eoin O’Sullivan kept matters tight in the Na Fianna defence while the midfield pairing of Ciarán Heeney and Séafra Fitzgerald ensured the visitors remained on the front foot.

There was another away victory in Broomfield as Erin’s Isle pipped St Sylvester’s by 0-16 to 0-14 with Lorcan Finnegan, Adam Langan and Glen Duggan all to the fore for the Finglas outfit.

Ollie Gaffney top scored with five points with Tadhg Gorman, Nathan Fitzgerald, Finnegan, Conor Donohue and Conor Berigan all chipping in with two points apiece.

Elsewhere in Go-Ahead Senior 3 Hurling Championship Group 1, Cuala picked up their first victory of the campaign as they registered an impressive 2-21 to 0-19 win over Naomh Olaf at Páirc Uí Bhriain.
