Round Up: Go-Ahead AFL1 & AFL2 - June 8th & 9th

Mon, 10th June 2024

St Sylvester’s condemned Clontarf to their second successive defeat as they finished strongly to register a 1-12 to 0-10 win in their Go Ahead Dublin Adult Football League Division 1 encounter at Broomfield on Saturday afternoon.

There was little to separate the teams throughout but a second-half goal from Dan Brennan proved vital as the hosts pulled away with five points to spare.

Brennan finished the game with 1-3 to his name and with Alex Wright adding 0-3, Sylvesters did enough to prevail thanks to further scoring returns from Cian Whitney, Senan Hogan, Páidí White, Dan O’Leary, Stephen Cunningham and Dylan Connolly.

Clontarf are now four points behind league leaders Na Fianna, who claimed their tenth win this season when defeating Whitehall Colmcille by 1-13 to 0-6 at Collins Avenue.

Vinny Flynn showed well for the visitors with a strong display around the middle third while substitutes Jonny Cooper and James Doran, who scored the Na Fianna goal, also impressed when introduced.

The Glasnevin outfit head the table by a point from a Ballinteer St John’s side that pulled away after the break to beat Ballymun Kickhams by 0-16 to 1-7 at Marley Park on Sunday morning.

The hosts had nine different scorers from play with Jack Lundy leading the way with four first-half scores but a Jason Whelan goal and three Dean Rock points saw Kickhams trail by just 0-7 to 1-3 by the interval.

The visitors resumed on the front foot through two Rock points and another from Davy Byrne but St John’s took control from that juncture with Aaron Bradshaw leading the way with three points.

On Saturday afternoon, St Jude’s made a short but fruitful journey to Páirc Uí Mhurchú as they eased past local rivals Ballyboden St Enda’s by 2-10 to 1-4.

David Sheehy top scored with four points for a Jude’s side that confirmed their win thanks to goals by Anto McGennis and James O’Loughlin.

In Hyde Park, Cuala cemented their mid-table position as they sparkled up front on the way to a comprehensive 7-17 to 1-9 win against Round Towers Lusk.

The hosts, who impressed through the defensive efforts of Michael Conroy and Luke Tracey, led by 3-7 to 0-7 at half-time with Niall O’Callaghan and Cathal Ó Giolláin causing havoc up front.

O’Callaghan top scored with 1-8 from play and with Ó Giolláin adding 2-2, the Dalkey side eased home through further goals from Charlie McMorrow, Conor O’Brien, Jamie Conroy and Cillian O’Shea.

In the Go-Ahead AFL2 St Patrick’s Donabate maintained their place at the summit of the table courtesy of a thrilling 1-12 to 1-11 victory over St Vincent’s in Robbie Farrell Park on Saturday afternoon.

Ollie Brooks continued his fine recent form by contributing five points and with Luke Sweetman adding a goal, the hosts did just enough to hold on thanks to three Clyde Burke points and a brace of Stephen Dempsey scores.

St Pat’s are now one-point clear from second placed Fingal Ravens, who finished strongly when accounting for Parnell’s by 4-10 to 2-11 in St David’s on Sunday morning.

The visitors trailed by 1-5 to 0-4 at the break with Adam Doyle accounting for the home goal but Ravens clawed their way back into contention in the second-half through points by Eoghan Daly, Sean Kinsella, Shane McDonagh and Dylan Kettle.

The away bench made a strong impact through Dan Cibotar, Jamie Clarke, Conor Hannigan, McDonagh and James O’Donnell while Barry Caulfield and Daire O’Rourke excelled in their back-line.

Kettle pounced for a brace of goals as the contest evolved while Cibotar and Jake Pope also netted to ensure their promotion drive remains on course.

Towards the opposite end of the table, Scoil Uí Chonaill recorded a precious win as they beat near neighbours Raheny by 3-10 to 0-14 at Clontarf Road.

The visitors dominated the early stages as they opened up an 0-7 to 0-1 lead but a goal from Robert Kennedy before the break added momentum to the home challenge.

Scoil made the most of the breeze at their backs in the second-half and confirmed their victory through goals by Emmet Rogan and Eoghan McKay.
