Round-Up: Go Ahead Adult Hurling League Division 2- 26th Feb

Tue, 28th February 2023

Last Sunday morning saw the start of the Go Ahead Dublin Adult Hurling League Division 2 season, with Naomh Fionnbarra doing just enough to see off a battling Scoil Uí Chonaill by 1-22 to 2-15 in Broombridge.

Dylan Curley impressed throughout for the winners, with his influence reflected in his five points from play, while Conor Carberry scored an excellent goal at a critical time to keep the hosts on the front foot.

Ryan Kirwan worked tirelessly around the middle third for the Cabra outfit, while Sean Lamb in defence was another to show well as the ‘Barrs prevailed by four points.

It proved even tighter in Poppintree, as Raheny edged Setanta by 1-15 to 1-14 in what was a scrappy and error strewn encounter.

The highlight of the clash was a wonderful finish from Liam Dunne for Raheny’s goal and it was Dunne who kept the away scoreboard ticking over from placed balls and open play.

The likes of centre-back Jack Fagan and Mark Murphy at midfield did just enough to secure a winning start for the visitors.

There was another away win in Broomfield as Ballyboden St Enda’s impressed from the outset in easing past St Sylvester’s by 3-24 to 0-14.

Finn McDonagh netted a brace of goals for St Enda’s, with Jonathan O’Driscoll raising another green flag while Ballyboden put further daylight between the teams thanks to the point-taking of James Roche and Cillian Kirwan.

Their dominance continued as the contest evolved with Davy Keogh ensuring a strong foundation around the middle of the park for St Enda’s.

At Somerton Park, Castleknock proved too strong for a weakened O’Toole’s outfit, prevailing by 1-23 to 1-9.

The visitors were already denied the services of Conn Rock and matters weren’t helped by an injury picked up by full-back Fionn Rock in the first quarter.

The hosts took full advantage with Conor Murray showing well on his return from injury to club hurling while Colm Breslin was a constant threat at corner-forward, picking off a few nice scores in the process.

Castleknock led by 0-13 to 1-3 at the break with the away goal coming through Aaron Cooling on the stroke of half-time but a scrambled goal from Evan McSherry early in the second-half ended any thoughts of a Larriers comeback.

Matthew Lynam kept the home total ticking over from placed balls for a Castleknock team best served by Darragh O’Connell, Breslin and Ronan Conway.

And at Kiltipper Rd, Thomas Davis edged out Erin's Isle by the minimum- 4-13 to 1-21- following an entertaining affair.

Both sides were missing inter-county players- Davy Keogh (Thomas Davis) and Conor Donohoe (Erin's isle), as goals proved crucial throughout.

A brace early on from Thomas Davis full forward Luke Dempsey helped the home side to victory, as did good accuracy from placed balls by Bryan Keogh.

Sean Reilly and Jamie Palmer impressed in the Davis defence, while forwards Damian Casey and Conor Berrigan put in strong displays for Erin's Isle on the day.

Go Ahead AHL 2 Results: Castleknock 1-23 O’Toole’s 1-9; Ballinteer St John’s v Whitehall Colmcille OFF; St Sylvester’s 0-14 Ballyboden St Enda’s 3-24; Thomas Davis 4-13 Erin’s Isle 1-21; Setanta 1-14 Raheny 1-15; Naomh Fionnbarra 1-22 Scoil Uí Chonaill 1-15.
