St Patrick’s Donabate continued their fine recent form in Division 3 of the Go Ahead Ireland Dublin Adult Football League when getting the better of Na Fianna by 1-9 to 0-7 in Ballymastone on Saturday evening.
The North County side were terribly unfortunate to miss out on promotion last year but have commenced this year’s campaign in a determined fashion, with Saturday’s win their sixth victory on the bounce.
The hosts weren’t at their fluent best initially, leading by 0-5 to 0-4 at the break but the introduction of Adam Dunne worked a treat as he contributed a match-winning 1-1 in the second-half.
Matt Molloy, Stephen Dempsey and Dylan Knight scored two points apiece with the St Pat’s scoring completed by Cormac Burke and Colm Kavanagh.
It proved far more straightforward for Trinity Gaels, who eased to a comprehensive 5-21 to 1-6 win against Ballymun Kickhams in Páirc Ciceam.
Shane Concannon and Shaun Flanagan kept things tight at the back for the visitors while Evan Whelan gave another influential performance at midfield.
Josh McCann top scored with 1-7 and with Steven Dunne adding two goals, Trinity Gaels eased home through the further scoring returns of Colin Dempsey (1-2), Daniel Gurien (1-1), Sean Boylan (0-4), Jack Rowe (0-3), goalkeeper Craig Reilly (0-2) and Whelan (0-1).
At the opposite end of the table, Karl Grimes converted two penalties in helping Naomh Fionnbarra to edge St Anne’s by 2-15 to 1-15 in Bohernabreena.
Lee Cooney kicked seven points for the visitors, who held on thanks to an excellent defensive display by Aaron Costello and the tireless work of Tommy O’Neill.
That defeat was the first loss experienced by St Anne’s this year, as they dropped into joint second place in table alongside a Naomh Barróg team that defeated St Peregrine’s by 2-17 to 0-11 in Blakestown.
In AFL4, Clann Mhuire did just enough to maintain their perfect record as they edged previously unbeaten St Patrick’s Palmerstown by 2-8 to 0-12 in their top of the table clash at Glenauline Park.
Both teams had secured six successive victories prior to Saturday but goals from Ben Rogers and Calum McCoy proved worth their weight in gold by the final whistle.
Goalkeeper Chris Hagan played a key role for the visitors along with Brian White, Adam McGrane, Cathal McGee and Colm Ó Muircheartaigh while Adam Rogers notched five vital points over the hour for the Naul side.
St Finian’s Swords strengthened their mid-table position as they pipped St Brigid’s by 1-10 to 1-9 in Nevinstown.
The hosts kicked eight first-half wides but a goal by Conor Colley and points from Brandon Caffrey, James Doyle, David Butler and Ciaran Doyle pushed them 1-4 to 0-4 ahead at half-time.
With Adam McGuirk, James Doyle and Andy Mallon showing well, they retained their control through a brace of Dylan Gray points and scores by Doyle, Butler, Cooley and Stephen McNally offered enough insurance to cover a late St Brigid’s goal.
St Finian’s Newcastle also had just a point to spare as they eked out a narrow 3-10 to 2-12 home win against St Oliver Plunkett’s/Eoghan Ruadh.
The visitors looked well set for victory but Mark Molloy popped up for a goal in added time to secure his side their third league win of the year.
The youthful hosts impressed through the contributions of Michael Hanly, William Hanly, Molloy, Oran Murphy and Josh Aherne and did enough to prevail through the excellence of centre-back Conor Spillane and the scoring of Lar Harney (1-3), Ronan Higgins (1-0) and Sean McCarthy (0-5).
