Dublin Senior Hurlers Claim Leinster Championship Win In Wexford

Dublin Senior Hurlers Claim Leinster Championship Win In Wexford

Sun, 24th April 2022

Dublin 0-24

Wexford 0-23

Dublin’s Senior Hurlers made it two wins from two in the Leinster Championship, with victory over Wexford following an epic finale at Chadwicks Wexford Park.

A brilliant Eoghan O’Donnell score in the fifth minute put Dublin ahead- and it was a lead they never relinquished despite a late Wexford fight back.

Backed by a strong wind, Mattie Kenny’s charges came racing out of the blocks and led 0-13 to 0-09 at the break, thanks to some sublime score taking from Dónal Burke in particular (0-07 in the first half), as well as from O’Donnell, Ronan Hayes, Conor Burke, Rian McBride and Donnacha Ryan.

Burke ended the contest with 0-12 to his name (0-08f), as he claimed the Man of the Match award.

It was score-for score early in the second half, as Wexford attempted to close the gap.

But despite facing into the strong wind, Dublin kept the scoreboard ticking over and several nice points from Dónal Burke, Conor Burke, Aidan Mellett, Rian McBride and Fergal Whitely had Dublin ahead by 0-20 to 0-14 after 50 minutes.

Wexford were awarded a penalty in the 52nd minute. However Seán Brennan made a superb save from his opposite number Mark Fanning to keep the hosts at bay.

Brennan was called upon just moments later to pull off another brilliant save, as Wexford piled on the pressure.

Dublin suffered a setback just before the hour mark when Cian O’Callaghan was shown a second yellow card.

However Chris Crummey and Fergal Whitely responded with two fine scores to push Dublin five points clear with seven minutes to play.

Lee Chin- on as a substitute for Wexford- and Damien Reck helped close the gap to a single point for the hosts as full time drew near.

However Dublin held firm. An outstanding block from Danny Sutcliffe deep into injury time helped keep his side stay ahead and claim a deserved victory.

Dublin travel to TEG Cusack Park in Mullingar next Sunday to face Westmeath in Round 3.
