Dean Rock: Historic year for Dublin’s top marksman

Dean Rock: Historic year for Dublin’s top marksman

Tue, 29th December 2020

As the 2020 season comes to a close it is time to reflect on the year just concluding as Dublin's senior footballers broke new ground.

Their recent All-Ireland SFC final victory over Mayo was a historic six in-a-row while in that final they scored the fasted ever All-Ireland SFC final goal.

Dean Rock was the scorer at the end of a warp speed break from the throw-in by James McCarthy and Niall Scully - it was also Dean's first goal in an All-Ireland SFC decider.

The Ballymun Kickhams clubman set a new scoring record for Dublin seniors this year when he surpassed the scoring tallies (combined NFL/SFC) of Jimmy Keaveney in Dublin's rescheduled NFL clash with Meath in Parnell Park.

On the same night Stephen Cluxton broke the record held by Johnny McDonnell as the county's longest serving footballer at senior level.

Johnny's career spanned from mid July 1919 to late May 1938 and against Meath Stephen Cluxton added that record to his incredible collection having first featured for the seniors in the summer of 2001.

During the Championship Rock made his 100th competitive appearance for Dublin (combined NFL/SFC) against Cavan in the All-Ireland semi-final, a game in which he also jumped over Bernard Brogan as Dublin's all-time SFC top-scorer.

Here we look back at Dean's scoring record since he made his senior debut.
