U16 footballers finish strong to defeat Down in Reilly Tournament

Sat, 13th July 2019

Dublin's under-16 footballers made it three wins from three starts in their group of the Gerry Reilly U16 Football Tournament when they defeated Down in Páirc Esler, Newry on Saturday afternoon.

Following their recent victories over Wicklow and Antrim the Dubs put in a strong second half display to overcome Down 3-14 to 3-11, after trailing by 0-7 to 2-4 at the half-time interval.

Dublin have now completed their group stage (Group B) and advance to the Cup quarter-finals in two weeks' time as group winners where they will play the runners-up in Group A (Cavan, Louth, Longford, Fermanagh, Leitrim) in Oldcastle GAA club, Meath.

The young Dubs defeated Wicklow 7-18 to 0-5 in Joule Park, Aughrim last Saturday morning and followed that up last Monday night with a 4-11 to 2-4 win against Antrim in the Louth Centre of Excellence, Darver.

Eighteen teams are participating this year with Kildare entering two sides (in Group A and D). The top two teams in each Group advance to the Cup quarter-finals with the next two progressing to the last-eight of the Shield.
