Former Dublin footballer and coach Declan Darcy is our guest on this week’s episode of The Hop Ball, sponsored by AIG.
Darcy, who famously captained Leitrim to Connacht Championship glory in 1994 before switching to his home county of Dublin, won a Leinster title in Blue in 2002.
But it’s his career on the sideline that has marked him down as a great of Dublin football.
Darcy joins Eamon Fennell for an hour-long chat to talk about his coaching career, which began shortly after his inter-county playing days ended in 2002.
All-Ireland glory with Dublin’s U21 footballers followed in 2003, 2010 and 2012, before his partnership with Jim Gavin continued onto the Senior side.
Darcy then played a key role in Dublin’s incredible success in the seven years that followed, culminating in the historic 5-in-a-row completed last September.
(The 2014 All-Ireland semi-final defeat to Donegal) "had a massive effect on me personally. I firmly believe we wouldn't have been as successful as we were without it"
