The Hop Ball Episode 12- Paul McGinley

Thu, 6th August 2020

2014 Ryder Cup-winning captain Paul McGinley joined us on this week’s episode of The Hop Ball, sponsored by AIG.

The Dubliner is one of the biggest names in world golf, especially following his Ryder Cup heroics for Europe as a player in 2002 and then, as captain, in 2014.

However, despite those memorable victories, McGinley revealed to presenter Eamon Fennell that golf isn’t even his favourite sport!

Instead, that accolade belongs to Gaelic Football, with McGinley insisting “If there's a good Gaelic match on & there's golf on- there's only one thing I'm watching!”

The Rathfarnham native delved into his GAA past as a youngster with Ballyboden St Endas, where he played alongside the legendary Jim Stynes.

A broken kneecap as a 19-year old ended his GAA career, but he went on to make a bigger name for himself as a golfer on the European Tour.

McGinley talks to Eamon about some of the secrets behind his victorious captaincy of the European Ryder Cup team in 2014, discussing the role of stats, how important the individual is in a team, dealing with pressure moments and plenty more.

He also explains the story behind Alex Ferguson’s role in that famous 2014 Ryder Cup win.
