Senior hurlers to face Carlow for first time since 2000 in Leinster

After a one-weekend break, it’s back to action in the Munster SHC this Sunday when Waterford play Limerick in Walsh Park (2.0) and Clare host Tipperary in Ennis (4.0).

Leinster continues its ‘round robin’ campaign, with Carlow playing Dublin in Netwatch Cullen Park on Sunday (3.0).

The big action in the Joe McDonagh Cup sees Offaly playing Antrim in Tullamore on Saturday (3.0).


LEINSTER SHC

CARLOW v DUBLIN

They meet in the Leinster championship for the first time since 2000 when Dublin won a ‘round robin’ game by a point, 1-16 to 2-12 in Netwatch Cullen Park.

Their most recent meeting was in this year’s 1B Allianz League campaign when Dublin won by 3-15 to 0-18 in the first round in Parnell Park. Donal Burke (1-4), Eamonn Dillon (1-1) and John Hetherton (0-4, 0-3 frees) were top scorers for Dublin while Marty Kavanagh was Carlow’s top marksman on 0-12 (0-9 frees).

Dublin have drawn one (v Wexford) and lost one (Kilkenny) of their two Leinster games while Carlow have lost to Galway and Kilkenny.

*Marty Kavanagh scored a total of 0-16 (10 frees) in the games against Galway and Kilkenny.

*Paul Ryan is Dublin’s top scorer on 0-11 (7 frees, 1 '65’) after their games against Kilkenny and Wexford.

CLARE v TIPPERARY

Tipperary lead the Munster ‘round robin’ table, having taken full points from their opening two games against Cork and Waterford. Clare have won their only game so far, beating Waterford in Round 1.

*This will be the third meeting between the counties this year. Clare won the Munster League final by 4-19 to 1-18 in mid-January but Tipperary avenged the defeat (2-16 to 1-11) in the Allianz League two weeks later.

*This will be the 53rd championship meeting between Clare and Tipperary. It’s 36-12 to Tipperary with four draws from the previous 32. It’s 8-2 to Tipperary from their last ten championship meetings with Clare since 2000.

*Tipperary’s top scorers after the Munster ‘round robin’ wins over Cork and Waterford are as follows: Jason Forde 1-14 (0-6 frees, 0-1 sideline), John O’Dwyer 0-11, Seamus Callanan 2-4, John McGrath 1-6.

*Peter Duggan (0-8, 0-7 frees) and Tony Kelly (0-5) were Clare’s top scorers in the win over Waterford.

*Clare won both of their home games in last year’s Munster ‘round robin’ beating Waterford by 2-27 to 2-18 and Limerick by 0-26 to 0-15.


LIMERICK v WATERFORD

Both are seeking their first win of the campaign, Limerick having lost their opening game to Cork while Waterford were beaten by Clare and Tipperary.

*They meet for the second time in nine weeks, having clashed in the Allianz League Division 1 final at the end of March when Limerick won by 1-24 to 0-19. Aaron Gillane score 1-9 (0-4 frees) for Limerick while Stephen Bennett was Waterford’s top scorer on 0-9 (0-6 frees).

*A defeat for Waterford would leave them missing a top three finish for a second successive year.

*Limerick were easy winners over Waterford (2-26 to 1-16) in last year’s Munster ‘round robin’ clash. Shane Dowling scored 0-15 (13 frees) for Limerick while Pauric Mahony landed 0-10 (9 frees) for Waterford.

*Next Up...Waterford will play Cork in their final ‘round robin game in Pairc Ui Chaoimh on Saturday week while Limerick will play Clare in their third game in LIT Gaelic Grounds on Sunday week.

They meet in the championship for the first time since 2014 when Offaly won an All-Ireland qualifier by 2-19 to1-20 in Ballycastle.

Antrim have won one of their two games while Offaly have lost both of theirs to Laois and Westmeath.
