Senior hurlers battling way back to full fitness

Senior hurlers battling way back to full fitness

Thu, 21st January 2016

While Dublin are preparing for Sunday’s Bord na Móna Walsh Cup semi-final against Galway in Parnell Park (2.0) a group of senior panellists are making their way back to full match fitness.

“We have a couple oflong-term injuries and they’re a bit away yet. They’re back in training. But they’re a bit off playing a competitive game yet,” says Dublin manager Ger Cunningham.

Ryan O’Dwyer is still recovering from the injuries he suffered last October.

Peter Kelly is rehab-ing following an operation after dislocating his knee.

Fellow defender Paul Schutte is out of action until probably the middle of March after dislocating his shoulder.

“I’m looking at mid-March so looking at the last few games of the league,” says Paul.

“I’ve got full movement back so I just need to start strengthening it up.”

However, the return to the panel this year of Oisín Gough is a big boost to the Dubs.

“Big plus. He’s a great competitor. He’s a very good corner-back/full-back. He’s a very good defender.

“We missed him last year when he wasn’t there. So we were delighted when he made himself available again to come back in.

“And he’s been great since he’s been back,” adds Ger Cunningham.

The winner of Sunday’s Walsh Cup semi-final will progress to a Croke Park final as the curtain-raiser to Dublin v Kerry in the NFL opening night on Saturday week.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity but that’s one step away. But we’ll focus on Galway first,” concludes Ger.
