Senior camogie team progress to All-Ireland semi-final

Sun, 6th August 2017

DUBLIN 1-16 WEXFORD 0-12

Dublin are through to the All-Ireland senior camogie semi-final for the first time in 27 years following Saturday’s superb seven-point victory over Wexford at Semple Stadium.

“We’ve been hitting 30-minute and 40-minute games but we hadn’t produced the 60 minutes,” says Dublin manager David Herity.

“We knew it was in them though and they showed there. It was an incredible performance.

“We knew how good Wexford are. They’re in the semi-finals every single year. It’s 1990 since Dublin were in a semi-final. We knew we were up against it. It’s great, 27 years of history gone anyway!

“There’s a revolution happening in Dublin. The U16s, the minors, the premier juniors were all in All-Ireland semi-finals. It was up to us to stand up to the plate and get the seniors into it and we’ve done our job. I’m delighted.”

The Dubs had heroes all over the park with especially stand-out displays by Faye McCarthy, Aisling, Eimear McCarthy and Hannah Hegarty.

Ail Twomey struck for the only goal of the game in the 53rd minute to halt a Wexford comeback.

Wexford began well and led by 0-3 to 0-0 lead by the fifth minute.

Dublin settled with Hegarty and Eimear McCarthy driving their side on at every opportunity.

The freetaking of Aisling Maher was crucial – she converted five points from frees to add to two from open play throughout the game – and by the interval the Dubs were leading 0-9 to 0-4.

Dublin had a goal chance by Siobhan Kehoe was denied by Wexford’s Nicole Fortune.

However, with 12 minutes remaining Dublin’s lead had been trimmed to 0-14 to 0-11.

Then came Ali Twomey’s vital goal when she flicked the sliotar to the net from Kehoe’s strike.
