DUBLIN 2-14 CORK 1-13
Dublin minor footballers continued on their winning streak when they defeated Cork in this Electric Ireland All-Ireland MFC quarter-final at Semple Stadium, Thurles on Monday afternoon.
Two first half goals form Chris Sallier put the Dubs on their way as they led 2-6 to 0-8 at the half-time interval.
Sallier’s first goal came in the eighth minute, following great work by Eoin Murchan, to give his side the dream start with his second six minutes later to make it 2-1 to 0-5 after points from Gary Murphy, Micheál Ó Deasúna, Séamus Roynane and Michael Hurley had nosed the Leesiders in front.
Con O’Callaghan was prominent in the Dublin attack, scoring five points (including two frees), as they held an encouraging four-point lead at the break.
By the 12th minute of the second half Dublin had extended their advantage to seven points after Sallier, Eoghan McHugh (two) and O’Callaghan had all been on the mark to lead 2-10 to 0-9 while the Dublin defence was provided stout resistance to the best Cork could throw at them.
However, a Shane Kingston goal for the Rebels eight minutes from time set up a dramatic finale.
In the 56th minute Dublin forward Colm Basquel hit the post with a penalty but redeemed the situation a minute later when clipping over a point.
In the final minute the Dubs were awarded a second penalty – with Basquel opting to drive over the insurance point as Dublin advance to a last-four meeting against Donegal.
