RIP: Dublin camogie legend Úna O’Connor

RIP: Dublin camogie legend Úna O’Connor

Wed, 4th March 2020

Legendary Dublin camogie star Úna O'Connor has passed away (pictured fourth from left in front row)

Úna played in the golden era of Dublin camogie winning 13 senior All-Ireland medals coming next to her fellow legend Kathleen Mills.

Úna played for the famed Celtic club. Her intercounty career spanned from 1953 to 1967. Ten of her All-Ireland medals were in-a-row.

She was the first camogie player to be awarded the Caltex Award (later known as Texaco). A prolific forward she combined well with Judy Doyle to create great scores and cause heartache for defenders.

Úna played in the era when the Phoenix Park would have been her camogie home. A witty, good humoured player she played with a short stick which is so much in vogue today.

She was also a member of the Celtic club who won the inaugural All-Ireland club championship in 1964. The Dublin side defeated Deirdre of Antrim with the lethal forward scoring 3-1 in the final.

May she rest in peace.
