Rebels finish strong to defeat Dubs

Sun, 1st February 2015

CORK 1-15 DUBLIN 0-16

Dublin's wait to record a NFL victory by the Lee continues as the Rebels edged out the Dubs in Sunday's Division 1 encounter at Páirc Uí Rinn.

The last time Dublin won a League clash in Cork was in 1990 but with 15 minutes to go in Sunday's clash they had themselves in the driving seat when leading 0-15 to 1-10 following Dean Rock's seventh point of the day (including four frees).

However, Brian Cuthbert's men held the upperhand over the conclusion of the game to their dominance over the Dubs on home turf with points from Colm O'Neill (two), Mark Collins, Eoin Cadogan and Conor Dorman, with Dublin's sole reply a Michael Deegan score, to run out winners.

In the opening half Dublin had settled well with early points from Tomás Brady and Kevin McManamon inside the opening five minutes.

But to set the trend for the remainder of this evenly balanced contest the Rebels responded with scores from Fintan Goold and John O'Rourke.

The only goal of this duel came in the 12th minute when Jamie O'Sullivan was own target to push his side 1-2 to 0-3 in front.

But it was Dublin who slotted the next four scores with Cormac Costello, Rock (free), Shane Carthy and Rock again with a converted free to regain the lead, 0-7 to 1-2, by the 22nd minute.

Cork, though, cut into the deficit through Brian Hurley, Colm O'Neill and Conor Dorman to take the lead.

Costello added his second point in the 33rd minute and by the interval their was just the minimum in it, 0-9 to 1-7, with Eoghan O'Gara concluding the first half scoring.

Dublin restarted very well with O'Gara and Rock (twice, one free) splitting the posts but it was an advantage Dublin could not build on.

The Dubs face Donegal next Saturday in Croke Park (7.0)  in a double-header with the Walsh Cup final (Dublin v Galway, 5.0).
