The Dublin Senior Hurlers are back in league action this Saturday, as we host Tipperary at Parnell Park in our Allianz Hurling League Division 1B opener.
We warmed up for the league in the Dioralyte Walsh Cup, winning our group thanks to wins over Westmeath and Antrim before we were beaten by Galway in the semi-finals.
In the 2-31 to 1-12 win over Westmeath, Cian O’Sullivan hit 0-10 and goals from Donal Leavy and Brian Hayes, along with a useful Joe Flanagan cameo from the bench, helped Dublin to a solid win.
Diarmaid Ó Dúlaing and Paul Crummey were impressive in the clash against Antrim, and both found the back of the net and Flanagan demonstrated his ability as Dublin controlled the match from the first whistle to the last in the 2-31 to 1-20 win.
Evan Niland stuck 17 points for Galway, as they advanced to the final at our expense. O’Sullivan notched up seven points from himself as Galway had that little bit extra to see them home in our Walsh Cup semi-final tie.
Tipperary reached the Semi-Final of the 2023 Allianz Hurling League.
In their first match of the Co-Op Superstores Munster Hurling League, they had to deal with Robert Byrne receiving a straight red card after just 24 minutes. The extra-man advantage would let Waterford take control and Jack Prendergast found the net for the Déise to help them to a 1-12 to 0-8 lead at the interval.
There was a Tipperary resurgence when the match restarted, thanks to the efforts of Sean Ryan, Sean Kenneally and Alan Tynan, who notched up scores to get their side back in the game.
Ryan would then finish off a smart move with a goal before he converted a free to make it a one-point game and he would soon tie up affairs as he dragged his side level. He would end the game as top scorer with 1–12.
Cathal Quinn came on for the Premier County and got amongst those on the scoresheet, but in the end, Waterford did just enough to win.
The defeat to Waterford closed the door on Tipperary’s chances of progression from the three-team group.
They took on Kerry in a ‘dead rubber’ fixture and comfortably beat their Munster counterparts.
Liam Cahill’s men never looked in danger of being on the receiving end of a shock loss, but the Kingdom were still in the game at the end of the first-half as they trailed 0-17 to 1-11.
Gearoid O’Connor was Tipp’s leading scorer with 1-10 and Kenneally also impressed in the blue and gold jersey once more.
Tipp would wrap up their pre-season with a 1-26 to 1-20 win over Clare before a 13-point win over Limerick in the Dillon Quirke Foundation challenge match, played in memory of Quirke, who sadly lost his life during a match in 2022.
John McGrath scored an impressive 2-9, whilst Andrew Ormond found the net too on the way to scoring 1-2 as Tipperary brought down the curtain on pre-season with an excellent 3-27 to 1-20 win.
Pre-season is done and dusted and the time for talking is over. Micheál Donoghue and the Dublin faithful will be hoping our promising start to 2024 continues into our Allianz Hurling League campaign.
Can’t make it to Parnell Park this Saturday? You can catch the game live on TG4 from 2:30pm!
