Minor hurlers host Wexford in last MHC Tier 1 round-robin tie

Thu, 24th May 2018

Buoyed by their comprehensive victory over Laois last weekend the Dublin minor hurlers host Wexford in Parnell Park this Sunday (2.0) in their concluding game of the round-robin section in Tier 1 of the Leinster MHC.

The Dubs, who lost to Kilkenny in their opening game, had 20 points (2-21 to 0-7) to spare over the O'Moore County in Portlaoise last Saturday and have already turned their attention to the Slaneysiders.

All counties in Tier 1 (Kilkenny, Dublin, Laois, Wexford) are guaranteed safe passage into the provincial quarter-finals (take place on June 16), with positioning in the league table deciding their last-eight opponents.

Wexford defeated Laois in their opening game (1-21 to 0-18) before losing to Kilkenny last weekend (3-21 to 1-12).

Reflecting on last weekend's victory over Laois Dublin manager Mike Connolly said: “We played reasonably well on the day and we had to do that as Laois had played well against Wexford the previous Saturday and we were respectful of their challenge.

“We were stretched a bit in the first-half and Laois had a couple of good chances but we played well in the second quarter, which was our most consistent period.

“Our form in the second-half was a bit indifferent but I suppose we did what we needed to do and were comfortable enough at that stage.

“We got something out of the game and while we weren’t particularly good, we did our business reasonably well and we’ll look forward to going again next Sunday," added Mike.

“We have used 23 players in our two games so far and if you had said that to me a couple of weeks ago, I would have been satisfied with that.

“While we have a lot of matches, we have to acknowledge that they are championship matches and Dublin need to be winning championship matches.”

2018 Leinster MHC - Dublin's schedule: Round 1, (Sunday May 13) Dublin 4-12 Kilkenny 3-23, Parnell Park; Round 2, (Saturday May 19) Dublin 2-21 Laois 0-7, O'Moore Park, Portlaoise; Round 3, May 25 Parnell Park (2.0) v Wexford.
