Masters footballers stay on winning streak with win over Down

Dublin's Masters (Over-40s) footballers maintained their winning streak when defeating Down, 5-12 to 0-10, in Clonduff GAA, Newry on Saturday afternoon.

That makes it three wins from three starts having defeated Laois and Roscommon earlier in the competition.

The Dubs face Tyrone next in two weeks' time and conclude the group phase with games against Mayo and Kildare.

Ritchie Herrity was the scorer-in-chief for the Dubs tallying 3-1 against the Mourne County men with the other goals coming from Trevor Tansey (penalty) and Joey O'Rourke.

Dublin's scoring was completed by Ciaran McGuinness (0-3), Tommy Brennan (0-3), Anthony Briody (0-2), Derek Byrne (0-1), Craig Kilmurray (0-1) and Damian Flanagan (0-1).

The reigning All-Ireland champions overcame Laois 3-11 to 3-7 in their opening clash in Stradbally with their goals coming from from Niall Crossan, Ray Cosgrove and Ciarán McGuinness.

Dublin followed that up with a more comfortable 2-17 to 0-9 victory over Roscommon in Fingallians GAA, Swords with Niall Crossan and Ciarán McGuinness again in on the goal-scoring act.

There are 16 teams in total participating this year with the top four progressing to the semi-finals.

Val Andrews side will face Tyrone (Saturday, June 15), Mayo (Saturday, June 29) and Kildare (Saturday, July 27) in their remaining group games.

The other counties taking part are Clare, Antrim, Cavan, Sligo, Donegal, London, Galway, Roscommon, Westmeath and a combined Leitrim/Longford selection.
