Martin on the double for Vins: SFC round-up (Saturday)

Sun, 23rd April 2017

St Vincent’s Albert Martin scored two goals inside 90 seconds during the first half to quell any hopes of Round Tower Clondalkin pulling off a shock in Saturday’s Dublin SFC first round clash at Parnell Park.

The reigning champions were too strong for their opponents, eventually running out 3-19 to 3-4 victors.

The Marino side were quickly into stride to lead 0-6 to 0-1 by the 12 minute with Enda Varley, Albert Martin, Gavin Burke and Diarmuid Connolly all lively in their attack.

But Darragh Kinnavey had struck for two goals for Towers which stung Vins into life with Martin hitting to quick-fire goals, following slick interplay, to lead 2-9 to 2-2 at half-time.

Vins finished the game on the up with sub Craig Brennan scoring a goal and Diarmuid Connolly converting a ‘45’ with his less favoured left.

Despite leading 0-9 to 0-1 at half-time St Brigid’s were made battle all the way before overcoming St Peregrine’s 0-14 to 1-9 at Blanchardtown IT.

Paddy Andrews (0-3, 0-2f) and three points for sub Lorcan McCarthy were vital for Brigid’s with Christian O’Hara hitting the Peregrine’s goal following great work by Eric Lowndes.

St Maur’s finished with a flurry of scores to defeat Ballinteer St John’s 1-15 to 0-13 at Parnell Park.

St John’s led 0-12 to 0-9 after 40 minutes after playing some very enterprising football.

However, led by Chris Carthy and Conor McGuire in attack Maur’s were much the better over the close of the game with McGuire’s stunning finish for his goal central to their victory.

Ballinteer had their chances too but found Mark Butterly in inspired form in the Maur’s goal for whom Alan Byrne impressed throughout.

Paul Hudson and Shane McGrath put on a point-scoring exhibition for Thomas Davis as they defeated Clontarf 0-18 to 1-7 in O’Toole Park.

Both hit seven points from play with Hudson also adding two frees.

The Kiltipper Road men led 0-8 to 1-3 at the break with Tarf’s goal coming in added time through Ross McCullagh.

Dublin senior Jack McCaffrey did not line out for Clontarf as he makes his way back to full fitness following a hamstring strain.

St Sylvester’s were comprehensive 3-14 to 0-5 winners against St Anne’s in their Dublin SFC first round duel in O’Toole Park.

Goals from Jack Hazley and top scorer Dylan Connolly saw the Malahide side in total contral by the break when leading 2-6 to 0-1.
