Dublin manager Jim Gavin has been awarded the EirGrid Manager Moment of the Month for September.
The monthly award was launched across both codes of the GAA Senior Championship in July. EirGrid, the Official Timing partner of the GAA, looks to recognise and reward a specific moment that has captured the public’s imagination and lights up the All-Ireland Football and Hurling Championship.
Former Dublin football manager, Paul ‘Pillar’ Caffrey, and former Tipperary hurling and current Na Piarsaigh manager, Michael Ryan, sit on a panel of experts who were selected to identify the managerial moments that stood out across both codes and deserve special recognition.
After a nail-biting All-Ireland Senior Football Final against Kerry resulting in a draw, Gavin had some strategic decisions to make for the replay to ensure that the Dubs would come out on top.
According to the selection panel, selecting Eoin Murchan to start the replay was an inspired move. Not only did the Na Fianna man do an excellent job in the Dublin defence, he also scored a spectacular goal within seconds of the start of the second half, bounding through from midfield before slotting the ball into the Kerry net with pin-point accuracy.
Gavin’s squad would see off the Kingdom by six points and create a piece of GAA history by becoming the first team to win five senior championships in-a-row.
An overall EirGrid Manager Moment of the Year will be chosen from the monthly winners of Jim Gavin, Eddie Brennan (Laois hurling) and Liam Sheedy (Tipperary hurling) with the overall winner being awarded a top of the range LED digital clock and scoreboard to be installed at a club of their choice.
Speaking about the EirGrid Manager Moment of the Month, Valerie Hedin, Head of Communications at EirGrid, said: “Congratulations are in order to Jim Gavin for being awarded the September Manager Moment of the Month award. Gavin’s in-depth expertise of the game and powerful leadership qualities played a vital role in Dublin’s historic All-Ireland victory.
EirGrid’s timing partnership with the GAA has allowed us to celebrate and acknowledge those outstanding manager moments and achievements throughout the All-Ireland Championship. In the next few weeks the EirGrid Manager Moment of the Year will be announced, and I look forward to seeing who will take home the top prize for the club of their choice.”
