Dubs and Tipp to meet for tenth time in SHC action

Tue, 22nd July 2014

Kilkenny and Cork will discover next Sunday who their opponents will be in the GAA hurling All-Ireland senior championship semi-finals when Semple Stadium, Thurles stages the two quarter-finals.

The double-header features Limerick v Wexford at 2.0, followed at 4.0 by Dublin v Tipperary.

DUBLIN v TIPPERARY

This will be the 10th championship clash between them, with Tipperary having won seven to Dublin’s one while there was one draw from their previous nine meetings. Their most recent tie was in the 2011 All-Ireland semi-final when Tipperary won by 1-19 to 0-18. Dublin’s only win over Tipperary was in the 1917 All-Ireland final.

They clashed in Thurles in the final round of group games in this year’s Allianz League, a game Tipperary won by 1-19 to 0-19 in late March. Dublin led by 0-10 to 0-9 at half-time and by four points early in the third quarter before a goal from Patrick ‘Bonner’ Maher in the 42nd minute launched a Tipperary revival. It was level after 50 minutes but Tipperary out-scored Dublin by 0-7 to 0-4 from there on.

LIMERICK v WEXFORD

They meet for the first time in the All-Ireland quarter-final since 2001 when a late goal from a free by Wexford goalkeeper, Damien Fitzhenry gave his side a dramatic victory one point win in Croke Park (4-10 to 2-15). Limerick won the last two championship clashes (All-Ireland qualifiers) with Wexford in 2009 and 2011.

Wexford last appeared in the quarter-final in 2008 when they lost by a point to Waterford while Limerick’s last appearance was in 2012 when they lost by nine points to Kilkenny.

Wexford have had a much busier campaign than Limerick in this year’s championship, having already played five games in Leinster and the All-Ireland qualifiers while Limerick had two games in the Munster championship.

The counties clashed in this year’s Allianz Hurling League (Division 1B), with Limerick winning by 1-14 to 2-8 in the Gaelic Grounds in March. Limerick led by six points after 20 minutes and by four points at half-time but Wexford were back level after 46 minutes before the home side pressed on for a three-point win.

Twelve counties remain in the race for the 2014 GAA football All-Ireland senior championship, providing eleven knock-out games over the next two months.

Donegal, Dublin, Kerry and Mayo are through to the All-Ireland quarter-finals as provincial winners and will be joined in the last eight by the winners of Galway v Tipperary, Cork v Sligo, Armagh v Meath and Kildare v Monaghan.

The Cork v Sligo and Galway v Tipperary games will take place in Tullamore next Saturday (5pm & 7pm respectively), followed on Saturday week by Meath v Armagh and Kildare v Monaghan in Croke Park at 5pm and 7pm respectively.

Dublin, Kerry and Mayo all retained their respective provincial titles while Monaghan, last year’s Ulster winners, were replaced by Donegal, who also won the titles in 2011-12.

GALWAY v TIPPERARY

Having gone over 100 years without meeting the championship, they clash for a second successive year. Galway won a Round 1 qualifier tie by 1-12 to 0-11 in Pearse Stadium last year. Galway beat London and Sligo in this year’s Connacht semi-final before being well beaten by Mayo in the final.

Galway are bidding to reach the All-Ireland quarter-finals for the first time since 2008.

Tipperary will be having their fifth championship outing of the year, having beaten Limerick, Longford and Laois while losing to Cork. They are bidding to reach the All-Ireland quarter-final for the first time.
