Dublin v Tyrone: Recent meetings

Dublin's senior footballers come face-to-face with familiar opponents Tyrone when they counties met in this Saturday night's FL DIvision 1 clash at Healy Park, Omagh (7.15).

Last year the sides played in the All-Ireland quarter-final stage as well as during the league - the Dubs winning the championship tussle with the Red Hands on top for the league encounter.

In 2018 the counties clashed on three occasions - once early in the league and twice in the championship.

Saturday's meeting with be Dessie Farrell's first against Tyrone while for Tyrone boss, Mickey Harte, it will be the 22nd time that he has managed against Dublin in league and championship. It’s 11-7 in Dublin’s favour with three draws from the previous 21 encounters.

2019 ALL-IRELAND SFC QUARTER-FINAL GROUP 2 PHASE 3

SUNDAY, AUGUST S4: Healy Park, Omagh

DUBLIN 1-16 TYRONE 0-13

This victory in Healy Park, Omagh secured top spot in the All-Ireland SFC quarter-finals Group 2 for Dublin and a meeting against Mayo.

An Eoghan O'Gara goal in the fifth minute of added time ensured their was no late turnaround after the Dubs had led for most of this contest.

The powerful Templeogue Synge St man batted a long handpass from Seán Bugler to the net to put Dublin 1-15 to 0-12 clear with time almost up.

Bugler had a highly influential game scoring three points, two off his less favoured left foot as well as a fisted effort, in an all-round impressive display. Another point effort looked to have gone between the posts but was waved wide.

The early exchanges were evenly balanced before two Cormac Costello frees, after fouls on Paddy Small and Kevin McManamon, and Bugler's first put Dublin 0-5 to 0-2 clear by the 14th minute.

Bugler's point was top class after Paddy Andrews had cleverly broken a long delivery from Diarmuid Connolly into his path but he still had a lot to do to clip over from a very tight angle.

Dublin though had to endured some nervous moments at the other end with Evan Comerford looking very secure on a few occasions.

In the 15th minute Connor McAliskey was one-one-one with the Ballymun Kickhams man but Comerford denied him from close range.

A Richie Donnelly point from 46 metres but the gap for Tyrone but Dublin replied with points from Paddy Small, after being put through by Kevin McManamon, and Cormac Costello, off his left, following good approach play by James McCarthy and Jonny Cooper.

Dublin's best goal opportunity fell to Costello in the 23rd minute, after Paddy Small elected to pass rather than shoot himself, but the Whitehall Colmcille's man effort was blunted.

At the interval Dublin led 0-8 to 0-5 in front of the crowd of 15,315 and immediately on the restart Connolly broke forward before placing McManamon to clip over.

The biggest cheer of the day came in the 55th minute when Connolly, after working a good one-two with Costello, curled over off his left foot to make it 0-13 to 0-10.

Before then both counties had a sighting on goal but Conall McCann's well worked shot came back off the underside of the crossbar while Cormac Costello, after a clever flick-on by Bernard Brogan, had his shot parried by Tyrone keeper Benny Gallen.

With two minutes of normal time remaining Bernard Brogan was rewarded for some good movement with a point, his goal attempt blocked over the crossbar.

Diarmuid Connolly, who enjoyed an encouraging return to the starting team, was black-carded in the 69th minute with Dublin leading 0-15 to 0-10.

Points from Niall Sludden and Connor McAliskey but the gap to three points before O'Gara's goal ensured top spot for the Dubs.

2019 FL DIVISION 1

TYRONE 1-14 DUBLIN 1-11

Dublin's hopes of appearing in the FL Division 1 final were ended after being deservedly beaten by an energetic Tyrone in this clash at Croke Park.

Despite scoring a fourth minute goal when Cormac Costello's pace and clinical finish, following great defensive work by Paul Mannion, gave Dublin a great start they played second fiddle for most of the game.

Tyrone also saw the game out in comfortable fashion despite the dismissal of forward Niall Sludden (yellow/black) in the 50th minute.

The Ulster side defended in numbers but broke forward will telling conviction while Cathal McShane and Mattie Donnelly caused problems for Dublin's defence who were left exposed on several occasions.

Dublin might have had a second goal in the opening half but Costello was denied by the influential Niall Morgan in the 28th minute.

Costello's night was over before half-time when he hobbled off injured and he was not the only Dublin player that had to be replaced with injury as John Small and

Paddy Andrews added to the number of Dublin troops in casualty.

“That level of performance from the Dublin players certainly is not good enough, at this level you’ll be found out," said Dublin manager Jim Gavin afterwards.

“Our passing was certainly off in many phases of play. Our shot selection was very poor.

“Against a quality side like Tyrone, they are going to punish you at the far end and they got some great scores and, as I said, fully deserved winners.

“We have nine weeks now to run to championship, you take every game on its merits, you want to do well in every game you play in the league because they are quality games.

“But certainly a performance like that will certainly give the management team a lot to reflect on and certainly give the Dublin players a lot to reflect on, because that just isn’t good enough," he concluded.

Tyrone led 1-7 to 1-5 at half-time in front of an attendance of 19,927 - their goal a 21st minute effort from McShane after David Byrne failed to cut out a long angled low delivery.

The Red Hands were still two to the good when Sludden was sent off by ref Jerome Henry (Mayo) but Tyrone's response was vital to the victory as they reeled off the next three points through Richie Donnelly, Peter Harte and Cathal McShane (mark).

Dublin lifted themselves for one final surge with the likes of Jonny Cooper lending his services to the attack to some effect.

Ciarán Kilkenny grabbed a point and then had a goal attempt from 14 metres blocked by Ben McDonnell in injury-time.

Paul Mannion fired over a free to leave the gap at three points while Colm Basquel was foiled late on by a Mattie Donnelly block.

To add to Dublin's woes Paddy Andrews, who had been introduced for the injured Cormac Costello, suffered a broken jaw in the second half which required surgery.

2018 ALL-IRELAND SFC FINAL

DUBLIN 2-17 TYRONE 1-14

Dublin made history when they secured a four in-a-row of All-Ireland SFC titles for a team from the capital for the first time in last September's All-Ireland final victory over Tyrone in Croke Park.
The Dubs made a slow start with Tyrone dictating matters in the opening quarter to lead 0-5 to 0-1 inside 16 minutes but then a switch was clicked as Dublin hit a scoring surge to go in at the interval seven points to the good (2-7 to 0-6).
This purple patch was the most crucial part of the game for the Dubs starting with a great kickout from Stephen Cluxton inviting the jet-heeled Jack McCaffrey to accelerate up the Cusack Stand side for the highly influential Ciaran Kilkenny to ignite Dublin with a fine point.
The Dubs landed two hammer blows before the break via goals from Paul Mannion from the penalty spot - expertly dispatched after the Kilmacud Crokes man was fouled himself - and a Niall Scully goal, arriving with impeccable timing, following great work by Con O'Callaghan.
Dublin held Tyrone at arm's length in the second half while keeping the scoreboard moving but had to suffer some late drama when Colm Cavanagh was fouled and Peter Harte fired his spot-kick past Stephen Cluxton.
But there was to be no stopping the Dubs courtesy of their scoring blitz leading into the half-time interval with subs Kevin McManamon and Michael Darragh Macauley getting scores off the bench while the stellar Ciarán Kilkenny also fired over a late point after a lung-bursting run to get himself beyond the ball as a target.

Dublin booked their place in the All-Ireland semi-final with this very hard-earned All-Ireland SFC quarter-final Group 2 Phase 2 clash in Healy Park, Omagh.
It was a frenetic, physical contest from start to finish. A thundering early shoulder on Cian O'Sullivan set the tone for the physical stakes and as a contest it did not disappoint with some excellent defending and scoring by both counties.
Such was the intensity both sides made uncharacteristic mistakes also and Dublin will come away knowing the execution at times let them down, particularly in the hand-passing department as on several occasions they lost the ball in attack and Tyrone countered very effectively to punish them.
Dublin led 0-7 to 0-5 at the half-time interval. The crucial goal game five minutes into the second-half when James McCarthy made a surging run to link up with his midfield partner Brian Fenton. His initial shot was saved by Niall Morgan but the Ballymun Kickhams man reacted brilliantly to fist the rebound to the net.
At one stage of the second half Dublin pushed the lead out to six points but Tyrone came at Dublin in swarms late on and reduced the deficit to just two points and they also missed a pressure free (Ronan O'Neill) before the Dubs broke forward for sub Paul Flynn to settle the nerves with a point.
Dublin held strong in the face of much late Tyrone pressure with Jonny Cooper crucially in particular emerging in possession on a number of occasions.
"Tonight was all about coming up to Omagh and getting a result," said Dublin manager Jim Gavin.

It was two wins from two starts for the Dublin senior footballers as they overcame Tyrone by five points in Healy Park, Omagh in front of a crowd of 9,465.
The Dubs played almost the last half hour, including added time, with 14 men after Niall Scully had been dismissed for a second yellow card in the 48th minute.
Like in the previous round against Kildare Jim Gavin's men responded well to the early concession of a goal as Cathal McShane's 1-1 in the opening minutes had Tyrone four points clear inside five minutes.
However, as the half progressed Dublin began to find the feet when playing into a strong wind and by the break were 1-7 to 1-5 in arrears with Ciarán Kilkenny grabbing Dublin's goal in the 23rd minute.
“I think just how this Dublin team responds to that – they just roll up their sleeves and get on with it,” said manager Jim Gavin.
