Dublin Plunkett set to face Laois in Celtic Challenge

Tue, 28th May 2019

Dublin Plunkett hurlers conclude the group phase of the Bank of Ireland Celtic Challenge (U17) hurling tournament when they face Laois in O'Toole Park on Wednesday (7.30).

Plunkett have played three games so far in Group C suffering defeats against Wexford (0-20 to 2-12) and Offaly (2-11 to 2-10) before losing to Dublin Clarke (6-18 to 1-16) last Wednesday night in O'Toole Park.

Despite their defeats Plunkett, who are an U16 team, have gained great experience and played some fine hurling at stages so far in the tournament.

Last week Daniel Peel caught the eye to be awarded the Best and Fairest award for Plunkett against Clarke after a lively display that saw him score 0-6 (0-5f) while Gordon Rodgers scored 0-4 from play.

Next week Dublin Clarke, who have recorded victories over Plunkett and Laois, will face Offaly in Abbotstown (8.0) in their last group encounter.

All teams will progress to All-Ireland preliminary quarter-finals with their placing in the group stage deciding what grade level they play at quarter-final stage.

The Bank of Ireland Celtic Challenge is an U17 tournament for non-leaving certificate students who are not in their county's minor panel.

The Plunkett panel is comprised of the Dublin under-16 development squad excluding lads who have made the match-day 24 for minors in Leinster MHC.

Dublin Clarke are U17 only hurlers who are either not on the minor panel or are on the minor panel but not included in the Leinster MHC match-day selection of 24 players.
