Ballyboden St Enda’s made it an U16 championship double for the first time in their history when their hurlers defeated St Brigid’s 2-10 to 2-8 in O’Toole Park on Saturday afternoon.
Playing with wind advantage Boden set the platform for their victory in the opening half to lead by 12 points at the break, 2-8 to 0-2, but they still had to fight a rearguard action in the second half as Brigid’s came storming back into contention.
It could not have started any better for the Firhouse Road lads who goaled through Ciarán Ryan with their opening attack of the contest.
The influential Cillian Byrne then swapped points with Johnny McGuirk before points from Cillian Byrne, Rober Byrne and Conor O’Donoghue was followed by an injury-time goal from Aidan Mellet to put Boden firmly in the driving seat at the break.
However, inspired by the likes of Cian O’Sullivan and Johnny McGuirk Brigid’s began to cut into the deficit on the restart.
Five minutes from time a Kevin Callaghan goal set up a blockbuster finish with Cian O’Sullivan and Donnacha Ryan tagging on points.
But it was Boden who held strong for a historic day for the southsiders.
