AFL 1 Round-Up 12: A Round-Up of Saturday evening's Fixtures.
Na Fianna 3-18 Fingal Ravens 1-3
Ravens had the perfect start when Niall Tormey registered 1-1 a beautiful goal and a pointed free, but Na Fianna got down to business after this shaky start and delivered a master class in attack and defense. Ravens could only tack on 2 more points after their bright start, while Na Fianna put up a handsome 3-18 with goals from Paddy Quinn, Odhran Ó Maoiléidigh and Adam Caffrey. David Quinn was the stand out for Na Fianna at centre forward, they have a long break of matches to only get stronger. Fingal have an important battle with Brigid's in 2 weeks time, Ravens can secure a definite spot in Division 1 next year with a win, while Brigid's will be looking to claw them back in the standings.
Thomas Davis 1-18 Raheny 2-9
A vital 6 point win for Thomas Davis meant a crushingdefeat for Raheny in this 4 pointer, Thomas Davis edged 2 points ahead of Raheny who lie in the relegation playoff spot and they now face the well oiled machine that is St. Vincent's in 2 weeks time, a mere consolation is it being in St. Annes Park. Thomas Davis will look to push the gap out to 4 with a win over Templeogue, but it's do or die for Templeogue at this stage and they won't go down without a fight!
St. Maurs 1-7 Ballyboden S.E 0-12
Ballyboden invited back Donegal Inter County Goalkeeper Paul Durcan, as they just about got back to winning ways. Maurs provided the only goal of the tight affair from Vinny Whelan and they also missed a penalty which could of proved a decisive score. Maurs now have a huge clash with Cuala in 2 weeks in Rush and will look to propel themselves ahead of the Dalkey outfit and closer to complete safety in Division 1. Ballyboden have a mouth watering top of the table tie with Crokes to look forward to in 2 weeks.
Parnells 1-6 St. Sylvesters 0-17
Parnells have now felt defeat for a 12th consecutive round and are nearly set for automatic relegation, they will need to win their last 3 games on the trot and hope Templeogue lose their 3 remaining games. They still have Plunketts, Ballyboden and Maurs to face. Syls need wins and they secured one on Saturday by the margin of 8 points. They have a 4 week break till a 4 pointer against Brigid's, they are both 2 points above the relegation playoff spots currently held by Raheny and Templeogue. It will be a dog fight right until the end, with every game as crucial as the next.
Cuala 1-10 St. Vincents 3-11
Vincents showed their class and experience against AFL 1 debutantes Cuala. The first half finished 9-4 to St. Vincents with the bulk of the scores coming from Vincent's Tomas Quinn and Cuala's Ryan Scollard from play and dead balls. Vincents then took Cuala by storm with 3 goals in quick succession from Quinn and two from Adam Baxter. Two of Cuala's upcoming stars Darragh Spillane and Con Callaghan were prominent in a late revival, Con providing scores and Darragh with a great individual goal, but alas too little, too late. Cormac Diamond and Eamon Fennell provided pace and power respectively on the day, which Cuala couldn't handle. Cuala's goalkeep Darren McBrien is deserved of a mention with top quality saves throughout including a penalty save and he also provided scores from long distance frees and 45s. Cuala face a crunch game with Maurs, while Vincents will travel to St Annes Park to face Raheny.
St. Judes 3-15 Templeogue Synge St. 1-7
Judes romped home in Tymon North against Templeogue, they had 14 points to spare at end. Judes are now looking safe in the top half of AFL 1 after 2 wins in a row and can now mount a push for the last playoff place. Templeogue seem destined for the relegation playoff in October. They will have a contingent back from oversee's and big Denis Bastick back from Inter-County duty and could mount the great escape. Templeogue face Thomas Davis and can still mathematically stay safe with 3 wins. Judes face Ballymun in Pairc Ciceam and the result there will be make or break for a place in the Playoffs.
St. Brigid's 0-12 Ballymun Kickhams 1-9
It was a tit for tat game in Russell Park, with no side able to break free of the other, Cavan man David Gibney produced a fine display in Midfield for Ballymun, while Gavin McIntyre was Brigid's danger man kicking some vital scores. The only goal of the game was provided by Ballymun's Andrew O'Brien, but it wasn't enough to break the stalemate. A great point for Brigid's in the scheme of things, they face Ravens next and will be gunning for the win now in Rolestown. Ballymun welcome Judes to Pairc Ciceam and a win could see them into the top 4 with just 2 games remaining.
Kilmacud Crokes 0-8 St. Oliver Plunketts E.R 0-10
Plunketts gave Crokes their first taste of League defeat in a low scoring, goalless encounter in Silver Park. Plunketts had a great week with their second win in four days, they overcame Fingal Ravens last Tuesday 1-15 to 2-7 in Rolestown. Crokes are still on top, but only a point adrift of Na Fianna and Vincents after their wins on the weekend. Plunketts will surely edge themselves closer again to Crokes, they're facing struggling Parnells in Martin Savage Park next, will Crokes have a tricky trip to Pairc Ui Murchu in a fortnights time. We have a very exciting climax to the AFL 1 coming up, with only 3 games to play.
