A Round up of the Midweek action from AFL1!
Round ups:
St. Sylvesters 0-18 Cuala 2-10
A point separated the sides in the Standings before throw-in and this showed in the closely contested game. Cuala got off to a perfect start with an early goal, Syls coughed up possession after a short kickout and the turnover end up in the hands of Cuala's Niall Carthy who made no mistakes. Syls stayed composed and worked their scores well and went in at the half 2 up. Syls had Cuala pinned in their own half at the start of the 2nd half and racked up 5/6 points in quick succession, a main contributor was the impressive Stephen Cunningham. Cuala were now chasing the game and attacking a packed defence which they breached too late on. In a frantic conclusion Cuala's Niall Carthy got a second goal but it was a case of too little too late. Sylvester came out with a 2 point win and now take on Plunketts in Martin Savage Park on Saturday night with wind in their sails, while Cuala welcome the tough task of Judes to Hyde Park.
St. Vincents 5-19 Parnells 0-6
In PNU the home side ran out easy winners against Parnells who are still waiting for their first points of the season. An early goal from wing forward Shane Carthy got Vincents off to a good start and the second goal followed when centre back Craig Wilson finished after a 50 yard run through the middle of the Parnells defence. It was more of the same in the second half where Vins added further goals from substitute Kevin Golden, a Tomás Quinn penalty and a second for Carthy. Darragh Joyce was the main danger man for Parnells scoring a couple of well taken long range efforts. On Saturday Vins travel to Mobhi Rd to face Na Fianna, while Parnells have Raheny in Chanel College.
Templeogue Synge St 0-18 St. Maurs 2-17
Goals win games and such was the case in Dolphin Park last night. Templeogue racked up a fair return of 18 points, but Maurs 2 goals were the difference. Templeogue haven't registered a point in the league since week one and losing streaks are hard to overcome especially when missing talismanic players. Maurs won themselves two vital points which pushes them away from the bottom, they have a visit from a fresh Ballymun Kickhams side to Rush, while Templeogue face the daunting task of Crokes away.
St. Judes 1-10 St. Brigids 1-7
Both of these teams were missing a number of first team regulars in what was also a preview of the Round 2 SFC match that will be played later this year. Brigids got off to a lively start and were unlucky not to have an early goal when Shane Supples penalty came back off the post. Chris Guckian and Brendan McManamon showed well and helped Judes take control of the game. A Bryan Costello goal for Brigids with 10 minutes remaining ensured a tight finish but Judes saw it out to win by 3 points. Brigids are on home soil against Thomas Davis and Judes travel to Dalkey to face Cuala this Saturday.
Thomas Davis 0-13 Na Fianna 4-13
Na Fianna got off to a fast start out in Kiltipper Rd which was always going to be hard for Thomas Davis to claw back. Eoghan Murchan was proving very effective at stifling one of Thomas Davis’ main scoring threats in Paul Hudson and Paddy Quinn was winning a huge amount of kickout ball to provide a platform for Na Fianna to attack from. Alasdar Fitzgerald had a memorable senior debut by finishing 2 first half goals and at half time Na Fianna led 3-07 to 0-05, with the other goal coming from the always lively Odhran O’Maoleidigh. The second half was a completely different story as Thomas Davis were much improved after the break and kicked some excellent points. Na Fianna were able to keep the Kiltipper men at arm’s length by adding a few points and a further goal by Paddy Quinn came at a very fortuitous time to halt the momentum that Thomas Davis were beginning to build up. The ageless Jimmy Owens came off the bench to kick 2 impressive points but in the end Na Fianna were able to maintain the gap between the sides and secure the win. Na Fianna travel to noisy neighbours Vins on Saturday and Thomas Davis head to Russell Park for a tie with Brigids.
Raheny 1-4 Kilmacud Crokes 1-18
Crokes travelled to St. Annes Park and came out with a comfortable 14 point win over Raheny. Crokes were mean in defence allowing only 5 Raheny scores, Brian McGrath was one of the main enforcers and anytime Raheny did breach the defence David Nestor was there to fault them with some outstanding one on one saves. Apart from a defensive masterclass Crokes got a goal and a solid tally of 18 points, the bulk of these coming from Shane Horan, Stephen Williams and Mark Vaughan. On Saturday evening Crokes host struggling Templeogue Synge St and Raheny will look to get back to winning ways in Chanel against bottom of the table Parnells.
